Sega CD (Model 1) PCB

The first-generation Sega CD (Mega-CD) is now three decades old; failing electrolytic capacitors, dry grease in the disc sled, and tired regulators are far more dangerous to the unit than ordinary day-to-day use.

ESD & Safety

[edit | edit source]
  • Unplug everything. The add-on draws its own 9 V DC from an MK-1602 adapter; never service with external power applied.
  • Lethal mains present on the adapter PCB; do not open unless you understand line-voltage safety.
  • Laser diode class 1 – safe when assembled, but _never_ stare into the optical block with the lid interlock defeated.
  • Wear an ESD strap – the LC89515 CD-DSP and 315-5548 ASIC are static-sensitive and unobtainable.

Required Tools & Consumables

[edit | edit source]
Qty Tool / Chemical Notes
1 #1 JIS screwdriver Sega screws are JIS, not Philips – avoids cam-out
1 Plastic spudger set Lifts front-loader fascia & sled rails
1 Temperature-controlled iron (≈350 °C) + leaded solder Recap & regulator swap
Some Desolder braid & sucker Through-hole caps on MAIN / SUB boards
1 tube Synthetic PTFE grease Re-lubricate sled rails & lead-screw
1 91–99 % IPA + lint-free swabs PCB flux cleanup & laser-lens polish
1 New drive belt (≈25 mm Ø square / SCX 7.0) Replaces stretched tray belt
1 1-3 A 250 V slow-blow fuse Internal PSU board protection
1 1 ⁄ 3 AA 3.6 V Ni-MH OR CR2032 + diode Backup RAM battery mod

Board Stack & Typical Failures

[edit | edit source]
PCB (Assy No.) Function Factory Cap Type Common Age Faults
IC BD MAIN BD (837-8952 B) 12 MHz 68HC000 CPU, ASICs, system RAM SMD electrolytics Leaking 10 µF 16 V → boot crash, audio buzz
IC BD SUB BD (837-8953 B) Stereo DAC, op-amps, audio mixer SMD electrolytics Lost channel / hiss, muted CD audio
CDROM PCB – Sony KSS-240A Servo, RF-AMP, DSP Thru-hole & SMD Focus/tracking failure, radial sled stall
CONNECT BD (837-8326) 50-pin edge to Genesis 1 leaded electrolytic Bus drop-outs if cap shorts
PSU / Reg Module 7805, 7812, 7905, fuse Thru-hole Over 1 Ω ESR → 5 V sag, random reset

Disassembly Procedure

[edit | edit source]
  1. Eject tray (if operational) and remove Genesis.
  2. Take out four bottom screws; slide the upper shell _forward_ 1 cm then lift.
  3. Unplug the PSU header and CD-mechanism 21-pin ribbon (label orientation).
  4. Lift the CD-mechanism; disconnect the optical block flex and sled motor 2-pin.
  5. Unscrew the MAIN and SUB boards from the lower chassis; keep track of shield plates.

Power-Section Refurb

[edit | edit source]

Fuse & Jack

[edit | edit source]
  • Replace the glass fuse (F1) with a fresh 1.5 A SB 250 V part.
  • Re-flow the DC-jack pins – hairline cracks are notorious for intermittent resets.

Regulator Bank

[edit | edit source]
Reg Vout Dissipation Hot-Spots Recommended Drop-In
IC6 (7805) +5 V logic (≈850 mA) 75 °C stock Recom R-78E5.0-1.0 (Switcher)
IC7 (7812) +12 V motors (≈150 mA) 68 °C Retain; add silicone pad to chassis
IC8 (7905) −5 V audio DAC 60 °C Retain; rarely fails

Measure rails at CN5 before first power-up: +5.05 ± 0.05 V, +12 ± 0.5 V, −5.00 ± 0.1 V.

Complete Recap

[edit | edit source]

Console5 provides matched kits; the tables below list original values for verification.

MAIN BD (837-8952 B)

[edit | edit source]
Ref Original Replace with Function
C41–C49 10 µF 16 V SMD 10 µF 25 V @105 °C 68HC000 & ASIC decoupling
C51–C52 100 µF 6.3 V SMD 100 µF 10 V low-ESR CD-DSP core 3.3 V filter

SUB BD (837-8953 B) – Audio Path

[edit | edit source]
Ref µF / V New Spec Notes
C1–C14 10 µF 16 V 10 µF 25 V audio grade Coupling & op-amp bias
C40–C43 100 µF 6.3/16 V 100 µF 25 V Rail filters; leaks mute CD audio

Sony KSS-240A Servo PCB

[edit | edit source]

Replace all 9 electrolytics; if C207 (330 µF 16 V) has leaked, scrub with IPA then neutralise with 5 % vinegar rinse.

Optical Block Service

[edit | edit source]
  1. Clean lens: damp cotton swab with IPA → spiral outward; dry with air bulb.
  2. Re-grease sled rails & lead-screw (white lithium/PTFE).
  3. Replace tray belt (square 25 mm × 1 mm).
  4. Inspect laser ribbon for cracks; replace if any copper is exposed.

Laser Power Check

[edit | edit source]
  • Service manual spec: 45 ± 5 mV across TP1–TP2 while reading.
  • If < 35 mV even at maximum pot, the laser is worn; fit a new KSS-240A.

🔧 Alignment Pots (Sony Deck)

[edit | edit source]
Pot Default (Ω from CCW) Purpose Scope Test Point
F-G 1.0 kΩ Focus Gain TP6 (square-wave)
T-G 900 Ω Tracking Gain TP7
F-B 1.3 kΩ Focus Bias RF-AMP eye pattern >1.2 Vpp
T-B 1.1 kΩ Tracking Bias Stable eye pattern centre

Tweak only if you own a dual-trace scope, a pressed reference disc and understand Sony’s loop-gain method.

Backup RAM Battery

[edit | edit source]
  • Factory:* Varta 3.6 V Ni-Cd (1 ⁄ 3 AA) – 100 % leakage risk in 2020s.
  • Options:*
  1. Fit Tadiran TL-5151 3.6 V Li-SOCl₂ and add 1 N4148 diode (prevents charge).
  2. CR2032 holder + series Schottky diode; replace coin cell every 5 years.

Edge-Connector Care

[edit | edit source]

The 50-pin EXPANSION connector oxidises and starves the bus:

  • Flush with DeoxIT D5, scrub with stiff nylon brush, dry 30 min.
  • Apply tiny smear of No-Ox ID A-Special to the Genesis side only.

Thermal Mitigation

[edit | edit source]
  • Affix 15 × 15 mm heatsinks to the 68HC000 (IC1) and LC89515 (IC13) using 0.5 mm thermal tape – drops core temp ≈12 °C.
  • Ensure the RF shield lid is reinstalled; it doubles as a heat-spreader.
