This guide covers recapping the Acorn System 5 (late 1982). As a Eurocard rack it has per-card capacitors (a regulator electrolytic plus ceramic decouplers on each card), and as a fully-cased machine it also has bulk smoothing electrolytics in its integral mains power supply. The Acorn System 5 Handbook documents the boards.
The Eurocards of the Acorn System 5 are all powered from the rack's central switch-mode supply and carry no regulators; each has one or two small electrolytic or tantalum capacitors across its supply and a set of ceramic decouplers. The values below are from the parts lists in Acorn's Acorn System 5 Handbook.
# Record each electrolytic's value, voltage and polarity.

# Desolder, clean the holes, fit the new part with correct polarity, solder and trim.
Power supply
# Verify +5 V on the card and refit.

The supply is a mains-connected AC9231 switch-mode unit mounted behind the card frame (+5 V 6 A, −5 V 0.5 A, +12 V 2.5 A, −12 V 0.5 A). Acorn's parts list carries it as a single item and the handbook gives no component data for it, so any recap of the supply has to be planned from the fitted parts. A switch-mode supply rectifies the mains directly, so its primary reservoir capacitor can hold a dangerous charge after the plug is pulled. Unplug the machine and confirm that the primary capacitor has discharged before touching the supply board.

Procedure
# Switch off and unplug the System 5.
# Pull the card from the frame and note the orientation of each polarised capacitor.
# Desolder the old part, clean the holes and fit the new part with the same polarity and at least the listed voltage.
# Refit the card and check +5 V at the card's edge connector (side A pin 1, 0 V on side A pin 32).
