The '''Wheelwriter Service Manual''', '''Second Edition (November 1994)'''. 300 pages.
The '''IBM Wheelwriters Service Manual''' is Lexmark's service manual for the IBM Wheelwriter electronic typewriters, Second Edition (November 1994). The back cover gives P/N 1364752, order number SA40-0773-01, E.C. 534847, printed in the USA in December 1994. The PDF has 300 pages, from the cover to the back cover. It is a photocopy scan with an OCR text layer (OCRmyPDF), so the searchable text is unreliable for figures; check values against the page image.

'''The copyright is Lexmark's, not IBM's.''' The edition notice names '''Lexmark International, Inc.''' — IBM sold its typewriter and low-end printer business to Lexmark in 1991, and by this edition the Wheelwriter was a Lexmark product carrying the IBM name. Cite it as a Lexmark publication.
The edition notice is Lexmark's: "© Copyright Lexmark International, Inc. 1989, 1992", with comments to Lexmark in Lexington, Kentucky, and the statement that IBM and Wheelwriter are IBM trademarks "used under license".

It covers the whole Wheelwriter range: '''Wheelwriter 10, 15, 1500 and 3000; 30, 35 and 3500; and 50, 70, 5000 and 7000'''.
The manual covers eleven models in three groups, and many procedures are split by group:

== What it contains ==
* Wheelwriter 10, 15, 1500 and 3000
* Wheelwriter 30, 35 and 3500
* Wheelwriter 50, 70, 5000 and 7000

* '''General Information''' and '''Tools and Test Equipment'''.
It also separates single-board machines from two-board machines, and gives the two-board Wheelwriter 10 its own steps in some procedures. The earlier Wheelwriter 3, 5 and 6 are not covered.
* '''Diagnostic Information (2-1)''' — a long series of numbered '''MAPs''' (maintenance analysis procedures), each a decision tree:
** MAP 0100 Start; '''MAP 0110 Battery Backup'''; MAP 0120 CRT Display (WW 50, 70, 5000, 7000); MAP 0130 Diskette Option; MAP 0140 Display (WW 30, 35, 3500); MAP 0150 and 0160 End-of-Ribbon Sensor, mechanical and electrical.
** '''MAP 0170 Error Codes''' — with '''three separate code tables''', one for the 10/15/1500/3000, one for the 30/35/3500 and one for the 50/70/5000/7000.
** '''MAP 0180 Fuse F1 (+5 V)'''; MAP 0190 Carrier Homing Sensor; MAP 0200 and 0210 Printwheel Homing Sensor, given separately for '''single-board''' and '''two-board''' machines; MAP 0220 Indicator Panel; MAP 0240 Incomplete Power On Reset; MAP 0250 Intermittent Failure; MAP 0260 Keyboard; MAPs 0270 to 0300 Machine Electronics and Machine Inoperative, again split by model group.
* Safety information in several languages, repair information, adjustments and a parts catalogue.

* '''Single-board and two-board machines are genuinely different''' and IBM/Lexmark gives them separate MAPs for the printwheel homing sensor and the machine electronics. Establish which you have before following a procedure.
The power supply MAP (2-166) says there are three levels of Wheelwriter power supply. Level one has the primary fuse in an external removable fuse holder and fuse F1 (+5 V) on the regulator board. Level two has the primary fuse inside the switch tower and no F1. Level three has no replaceable fuses. MAP 0180 (2-54) for a blowing F1 therefore applies only to level-one supplies.
* '''Three different error code tables''' apply to the three model groups. A code looked up in the wrong table will send you to the wrong FRU.

* '''MAP 0180 names fuse F1 as the +5 V protection''' — the one component-level fact in the book, and the first thing to check on a completely dead machine.
The memory backup batteries plug into J7 on the function or system board of single-board machines and the two-board Wheelwriter 10, and into J4 on the function board of other two-board machines. Measured from pin 1 (red) to pin 3 (black), a two-battery machine should read 2.3 to 3.2 V dc and a three-battery machine 3 to 5 V dc. Memory is lost if the batteries are disconnected while the machine is switched off (MAP 0110, 2-16).

Sheetfeed operation needs ROS module U10 on the printer option board: P/N 1432213 on the Wheelwriter 10, 15, 1500 and 3000, and P/N 1432209 on the other models (MAP 0550, 2-209). Print can be lightened by adding up to two hammer solenoid shims (P/N 1342475) or darkened by removing them (MAP 0470, 2-184).

The error code tables (2-48 to 2-51) differ between the three model groups, so look a code up in the table for the machine being serviced.

The lubrication guide (5-1) lists IBM No. 10 oil and No. 23 grease by lubrication point and says not to lubricate the homing LED area, the print hammer's printwheel contact surface or the transport belt, and that cleaning fluids damage the covers. It gives no service interval.

The IBM Wheelwriters Service Manual is Lexmark's service manual for the IBM Wheelwriter electronic typewriters, Second Edition (November 1994).

The edition notice is Lexmark's: "© Copyright Lexmark International, Inc. 1989, 1992", with comments to Lexmark in Lexington, Kentucky, and the statement that IBM and Wheelwriter are IBM trademarks "used under license".

The manual covers eleven models in three groups, and many procedures are split by group:

  • Wheelwriter 10, 15, 1500 and 3000
  • Wheelwriter 30, 35 and 3500
  • Wheelwriter 50, 70, 5000 and 7000

It also separates single-board machines from two-board machines, and gives the two-board Wheelwriter 10 its own steps in some procedures. The earlier Wheelwriter 3, 5 and 6 are not covered.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There is no parts catalogue. Chapter 4 shows where boards, connectors and test points are, and part numbers appear only for tools (p. 1-3) and a few items named in the MAPs. There are no schematics and no component values. The MAPs isolate a fault to a board, plug-in module, motor, sensor, cable or fuse using connector voltages and resistance checks.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The power supply MAP (2-166) says there are three levels of Wheelwriter power supply. Level one has the primary fuse in an external removable fuse holder and fuse F1 (+5 V) on the regulator board. Level two has the primary fuse inside the switch tower and no F1. Level three has no replaceable fuses. MAP 0180 (2-54) for a blowing F1 therefore applies only to level-one supplies.
