OS 8.1 Emergency Handbook 1998

The Mac OS 8.1 Emergency Handbook is Apple Computer, Inc.'s owner-level troubleshooting booklet shipped with Mac OS 8.1, © 1998 Apple Computer, Inc., 69 pages. Its own subtitle: "Includes troubleshooting, hard disk repair, and software installation information". The scan is OCR'd and searchable, though the OCR is poor in places.

Of the Apple documents on this wiki that are not service manuals, this is the one closest to actual fault-finding — it is written for the user, but several of its procedures are the first things a repairer does too.

What it settles

Apple's own symptom-to-cause routing for the start-up icons. The booklet maps each start-up symptom to an ordered list of solutions with page references:

Disk icon with a blinking question mark	external equipment connected and on → SCSI ID conflicts → "re-bless" the System Folder → extension conflicts → reset PRAM → test and repair the hard disk → reinstall system software
Disk icon with an X	using the correct disk as a startup disk
"Sad Macintosh" icon	external equipment connected and on → correct startup disk → (and onward through the same list)
Computer won't start up at all	getting power → monitor connected and adjusted → increase memory for system software → force restart → memory and expansion cards seated → replace the backup battery
Unusual sound at start-up	external equipment → memory and expansion cards installed correctly
Freezes while extension icons appear	take notes → external equipment → extension conflicts → test and repair the hard disk → reinstall

Two things in that list are hardware checks that get skipped: reseating memory and expansion cards as the response to an unusual start-up sound, and replacing the backup battery as a cause of a machine that will not start at all. Both appear in Apple's own list, at owner level, before any service call.

Note what Apple does not say here. The booklet names no battery voltage, no battery part number and no replace-below threshold — for those, see Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage and the machine's own Service Source volume. What it does not contain

No schematic, no parts list, no component values, no disassembly and no measurement. It is a software and configuration troubleshooting booklet.
