The '''Error Chords''' symptom chart is worth knowing about: these machines signal startup faults by sound as well as by the screen, and Apple's chart maps the chords to causes.
The exploded view gives service part numbers, including the power supply (661-0758), floppy drive (661-0121 or 661-0474), top cover (922-0405), bottom case (922-0406), speaker (922-0055) and internal chassis (922-0058). Logic board and hard drive numbers are referred to a separate parts list.<ref name="ev">''Centris 650/Quadra 650'' Service Source, Exploded View (PDF p. 81).</ref>

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

Battery: with the top cover off, measure the lithium battery on the 10 V DC range, positive probe to the end marked "+" on the logic board. Replace it if it reads below 3.2 V.[3]

Symptom charts: for a one-part error chord at startup, Apple's order is to disconnect the hard drive power and data cables and reboot, then disconnect the floppy drive cable and reboot, then replace the logic board, keeping the customer's SIMMs.[4] A system that shuts down intermittently may be tripping the thermal protection: check the air vents are clear, and the system should recover after 30 to 40 minutes. Next come the power cord, the battery, the power supply and the logic board. Clicking, chirping or thumping calls for the power supply, then the logic board.[5]

Upgrades: both models accept the Power Macintosh card in the processor-direct slot, and both could be upgraded to a Power Macintosh 7100/66 or 7100/66AV.[6]

The exploded view gives service part numbers, including the power supply (661-0758), floppy drive (661-0121 or 661-0474), top cover (922-0405), bottom case (922-0406), speaker (922-0055) and internal chassis (922-0058). Logic board and hard drive numbers are referred to a separate parts list.[7]

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

It is module-level. There is no schematic, no component values or capacitor list, no supply-rail voltages or tolerances and no fuse rating.[1] Power supply ratings and expansion-slot power budgets are in Apple's Macintosh Centris 610 Centris 650 and Quadra 800 Developer Note.
