Macintosh Performa 5440: Difference between revisions

From RetroTechCollection
Apple Service Source: width and depth were transposed (Apple: 16 in W x 15.1 in D); the 47 lb weight was invented (Apple: 17 lb / 19 lb with CD-ROM); sound input port is stereo, and SRS surround-sound mode is a 5500 feature not a 5400 one; Apple lists no 1024x768 mode for the 5400 series; added Apple's electrical, display, battery (3.0 V) and adjustment-control data; removed the unsourced M3046 model number
Red-link sweep: retarget delegation links to the pages that actually exist (LC 550/LC 580/Performa 6100 sub-pages do not, the Performa 550/580 and Power Macintosh 6100 ones do), fix the malformed 'Macintosh Power Macintosh 5400' title, and de-link targets with no page

The Macintosh Performa 5440 is an all-in-one personal computer manufactured by Apple Computer, Inc., introduced on August 1, 1996.[1] It is the fastest variant of the Performa 5400CD series with a 180 MHz processor and a distinctive black case.

The Performa 5440 was sold only in Europe and Asia. A Director's Edition variant sold in Australia featured 24 MB of RAM, a 2.4 GB hard drive, and pre-installed TV/video capabilities.

Differences from Performa 5400CD

[edit | edit source]

The Performa 5440 differs from the Performa 5400CD in the following ways:

  • CPU Speed: 180 MHz (vs 120 MHz)
  • CD-ROM: 8X (vs 4X)
  • Case Color: Black (vs platinum)
  • Display Resolution: Supports 800×600 at 16-bit (vs 640×480)
  • Market: Europe and Asia only
  • Director's Edition: 24 MB RAM, 2.4 GB HDD, TV/video (Australia only)

Architecture and Processor

[edit | edit source]

The Performa 5440 uses a PowerPC 603e processor running at 180 MHz on a 40 MHz system bus. The 603e is a 32-bit processor with a 64-bit data path and integrated floating-point unit.

Cache Configuration

[edit | edit source]
  • L1 Cache: 32 KB (16 KB instruction, 16 KB data)
  • L2 Cache: 256 KB (optional)

Memory and Storage

[edit | edit source]

RAM Configuration

[edit | edit source]
Specification Details
RAM Type 168-pin DIMM
Minimum Speed 70 ns
Motherboard RAM 8 MB soldered
Standard RAM 16 MB (24 MB Director's Edition)
Maximum RAM 136 MB
RAM Slots 2

Storage Systems

[edit | edit source]
  • Hard Drive: 1.6 GB or 2.4 GB (Director's Edition) IDE internal drive
  • Floppy Drive: 1.44 MB 3.5" manual-eject
  • CD-ROM: 8X

Display and Graphics

[edit | edit source]

The built-in 15" shadow mask CRT supports:

  • 640×480 at 16-bit color
  • 800×600 at 16-bit color
  • 832×624 at 8-bit color
  • 1024×768 at 8-bit color (external mirroring)

Black Case Design

[edit | edit source]

The Performa 5440 was one of the few Macintosh computers produced with a black case rather than the standard platinum color. This distinctive appearance was intended to appeal to the consumer multimedia market.

Apple service data

[edit | edit source]

These are Apple's own figures, from the Power Macintosh/Performa 5400 and 5500 Series Service Source volume hosted on this wiki.[2]

Item Apple's figure
Line voltage 100–240 VAC, 47–63 Hz
Power 125 W; 2.5 A maximum and 220 W maximum for all line and load conditions
Case Height 17.5 in. (445 mm), width 16 in. (406 mm), depth 15.1 in. (383 mm)
Weight Without CD-ROM 17 lb.; with CD-ROM 19 lb.
Display 15-inch shadow mask, 12.8-inch viewable image, 0.28 mm dot pitch, 66.7 Hz vertical
Sound output Two stereophonic output ports, nominally 0.5 V RMS into 39 ohms
PRAM battery Verify on the 10 V DC scale; replace below 3.0 V

Apple's metric weight is printed as "19 lb. (21.15 kg)" in this volume and in the 5200/5300 and 5260/5280 volumes. 19 lb is 8.6 kg, so the metric figure is an error in Apple's own text and is not repeated here.[2]

The Adjustments chapter for this family is Light Meter Setup, Geometry, Video and Focus — it contains no rail-voltage adjustment and no rail-tolerance table. The controls Apple names are VR701 (horizontal shift) with the three-position centring switch SW701, VR601, and on the CRT video board VR301, VR302 red gain, VR303 green gain, VR304 red bias and VR305 green bias, set with a plastic tool against the Display Service Utility's All-White Screen.[2]

Memory is not interchangeable across the range even though the sockets look identical: the 5400/120, 5400/160 and 5400/180 take 168-pin, 70 ns or faster, 2K refresh DIMMs, while the 5400/200 and the 5500s take 168-pin, 60 ns or faster, 5-volt buffered EDO DIMMs.[2]
