Macintosh II/IIx/IIfx Service Source: Difference between revisions

P4 verification: turn document holder into a real documentation page (contents with PDF page numbers, Apple's own specifications, honest gaps, citing pages)
Check against PDF: full spec table for all three models, exploded-view part numbers (page said no parts list), NEC SIMM, PMMU, FDHD ROM, battery holder and IIfx termination details with pages; remove uncited 'no other volume' and Quadra 840AV comparison; correct Pina battery framing; add IIcx and Battery Refurbishment to citing pages

The Macintosh II/IIx/IIfx volume of Apple's Service Source is a 87-page service manual covering the Macintosh II, IIx and IIfx. The PDF was distilled on 1 December 1995.
The Macintosh II/IIx/IIfx Service Source is Apple's 87-page service manual for the Macintosh II, Macintosh IIx and Macintosh IIfx. The PDF was produced on 1 December 1995. Like other Service Source volumes it works at module level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and upgrade procedures, and module part numbers, with no schematics or component values. Page numbers below are the PDF's.

Service Source volumes are module-level documents. They give Apple's own specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures and module part numbers, but they do not carry schematics, board-level parts lists or component values, so they cannot be used to source a capacitor table. Where a figure below is quoted, it is quoted as Apple printed it.

What it settles
Additional Procedures carries Macintosh IIfx SCSI Termination, which is the source of the IIfx's distinctive black terminator requirement, and a Battery Holder Board replacement that no other volume has. Larry Pina's Macintosh II Repair and Upgrade Secrets measures the same cells independently and agrees with Apple's threshold: Tadiran 3.6 V lithium cells read 3.2–3.85 V when good, 2.3–3.1 V when weak and are dead below 2.3 V.
* Batteries: two lithium cells on the logic board; replace any that reads below 3.2 V on the 10 V DC range (p. 70). A Macintosh II or IIx with soldered batteries gets a battery holder board before new cells are fitted: cut the old leads, desolder with an iron of 50 W or less, and fit the holder with its positive side in the holes marked positive (pp. 74-79).
* NEC SIMMs: Apple-labelled SIMMs made by NEC with a date code of 9052 or earlier cause the error chord, failure to boot, ghosting or lost video, hangs and ID errors; Apple's cure is to replace them (pp. 15-31).
* Thermal shutdown: with blocked vents the thermal protection circuit shuts the system down; it recovers after 30-40 minutes (p. 17).
* PMMU upgrade for the Macintosh II: prise out the HMMU and fit a PMMU in the same socket, dot to dot (pp. 58-60).
* 1.4 MB floppy upgrade for the Macintosh II: replace the four ROMs with 342-0639 (HI, C13), 342-0640 (MED HI, C12), 342-0641 (MED LO, E13) and 342-0642 (LO, E12), replace the IWM with a SWIM, and use system software 6.0.2 or later. Apple notes the kit is no longer available and that a IIx or IIfx logic board is the alternative (pp. 61-67).
* IIfx SCSI termination: external chains end in one SCSI Cable Terminator II, never more than one; an internal SCSI filter supplies termination capacitance for third-party drives and Apple drives shipped before 19 March 1990; a IIfx shipped without a hard drive has a termination block and filter on the logic board connector, and the filter moves to the drive when one is fitted (pp. 80-85).
* Exploded-view part numbers: logic boards 661-0528 (II), 661-0529 (IIx), 661-0522 (IIfx); power supply 661-0375 (II, IIx), 661-0542 (IIfx); floppy drives 661-0345 (800K) and 661-0474 (1.4 MB); 40 MB hard drive 661-0216 (p. 87).

* No schematic, no board-level parts list and no component values.
No schematic, no component values and no parts list below module level. There are no power-supply voltages, tolerances or adjustments, and no per-slot NuBus power figures.
* The NuBus and PDS power budgets are not broken out per slot in this volume the way they are in the Quadra 840AV manual.
