The Macintosh Performa 5300CD is an all-in-one Macintosh with a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e processor and a built-in 15-inch display, introduced by Apple Computer on October 17, 1995. It uses the same enclosure, power supply, analogue/video board and CRT as the Performa 5200CD, and Apple services both in one manual. The retail box and front badge read "Macintosh Performa 5300". The education-market equivalent is the Power Macintosh 5300/100 LC.
Models
Apple's Service Source for this family covers the Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC and 5300/100 LC, the Performa 5200CD, 5215CD and 5300CD, and the international Performa 5320CD. The 5320CD superseded the 5300CD outside the United States; it has a 120 MHz 603e and 16 MB of RAM and is otherwise the same machine. EveryMac lists a Performa 5300CD "Director's Edition", a better-equipped configuration sold in Europe and Australia.

Model Variants
Apple built the 5000 series in two revisions. With the front bezel removed, speakers moulded into the bezel mark the original version and speakers fixed to the sides of the metal chassis mark Rev. B. On 5200-series machines the label on the lower rear of the case also gives it away: 620-0635 or 620-0835 for the original, 620-0637 or 620-0837 for Rev. B. The Rev. B changes are not backward-compatible, so the take-apart procedures and module part numbers depend on the revision.

The Performa 5300 series includes two variants sharing the same logic board:

The internal hard drive connects via an 8-bit IDE controller. External SCSI devices connect through the DB-25 port on the rear of the system. The system does not provide SCSI termination power; external devices must supply their own.
Apple's own documents disagree on two of these figures. The Service Source weight entry reads "Without CD-ROM: 17 lb. With CD-ROM: 19 lb. (21.15 kg)"; the kilogram figure matches the 47 lb on Apple's technical-specification page, and the pound figures do not. The technical-specification page also swaps width and depth (15.1 in wide, 16 in deep). The LC processor-direct slot is not a true 68030 PDS: cards that act on the main processor, such as RAM caches and FPU cards, do not work in it.

Display and Graphics
Known faults
Apple ran a Repair Extension Program for system freezes and sudden changes in colour hue on the Power Macintosh and Performa 52xx and 53xx (except the 5260 and 5280). Its Service Source gives the checks:
* A freeze in which the clock stops and the cursor will not move points to the logic board or the cache/ROM DIMM. If the clock chip at U10 is not part number 343S1191 or 343S1121, Apple replaced the logic board; if the cache/ROM DIMM has the layout shown in the manual and no sticker on its middle chip, Apple replaced the DIMM. Type 11 errors are a software matter and are not covered.
* Open Transport 1.1 does not work on the 5200 and 5300; they need Open Transport 1.1.1, and its installer refuses to run until an affected cache/ROM DIMM has been replaced.
* A sudden or intermittent change in colour hue is cured by replacing the internal RGB cable. If the tint stays after a new cable, the analogue board is at fault.
* A flashing question mark at startup on a version B logic board with a card in the PDS or communications slot: if the chip at U6 is 343S0138-A without the Texas outline and there is no wire at U27 on the underside, Apple replaced the logic board.
* An Ethernet card without a hooked fence can rock out of the communications slot and drop the network connection.

The built-in 15" shadow mask RGB display supports:
Low End Mac reports that the serial ports do not support hardware handshaking on most logic boards (the last revision does), which limits external modems at 9600 bps and above. It also reports that a SCSI terminator on the empty SCSI port improves network stability, and that the machine provides no SCSI termination power, so external devices must supply their own. It gives System 7.5.1 to Mac OS 9.1 as the supported range.

{| class="wikitable" style="width:70%"
Apple's symptom charts route most power and display faults to modules. A machine that starts from the rear power switch but not from the keyboard, restarts after Shut Down, or shuts down when Restart is chosen has a faulty analogue board. A machine that will not start at all gets a logic board reset (battery disconnected for 5 to 10 minutes), then a new power supply. The analogue board also carries the one voltage adjustment Apple publishes for this family: the high-voltage control, set to 29.5 V DC ± 0.1 V at a sense diode after a CRT or deflection board is replaced. The procedure is on Macintosh Performa 5200CD General Maintenance. Read CRT Discharge Procedure before opening the case.

Video uses 1 MB of system RAM dedicated to display functions. This allocation remains fixed regardless of total system RAM. An optional LC PDS video card can provide a secondary display output via DB-15 connector.
The clock battery is a 4.5 V alkaline pack, so any leakage is alkaline and is neutralised with dilute white vinegar. See Battery Explosion, Capacitor or Corrosion Damage.

Audio Capabilities
Maintenance and repair guides
The Performa 5300CD shares its guides with the Performa 5200:
* Macintosh Performa 5200CD General Maintenance
* Macintosh Performa 5200CD Troubleshooting
* Macintosh Performa 5200CD Capacitor Replacement Guide

The Performa 5300CD supports 8-bit stereo sound playback. Audio input uses a PlainTalk-compatible microphone jack with 16-bit mono recording at line level (100 mV RMS average, 1.8 V RMS maximum, 100 kΩ impedance).
Documentation
Apple's Power Macintosh/Performa 5200 and 5300 (not 5260, 5280) Service Source (1997, 319 pages) is a module-level manual: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart, adjustments, the Repair Extension procedures and an exploded view with part numbers, but no schematics or component values.

The Performa 5260CD, despite its lower model number, shipped later with a newer logic board design supporting 16-bit stereo playback.

Known Issues
The Performa 5300 series, along with the related 5200 and 6200/6300 series, has documented reliability and performance issues:

* Limited IDE controller (8-bit) reduces hard drive throughput
* LC-derived architecture bottlenecks the 603e processor
* Serial port limitations affect high-speed modem compatibility
* Network stability issues resolved by Open Transport 1.2 (Mac OS 8)
* Installing a SCSI terminator on an unused SCSI port improves network stability

Third-party hard drive utilities such as FWB HD Toolkit provide better IDE drive performance than Apple's HD SC Setup.

* Surge voltage 300 V rms for 100 ms; peak inrush current 40 A pk; current 2.5 A maximum for all line and load conditions; 220 W maximum for all line and load conditions

* PRAM battery 3.6 V ½AA lithium; Apple: replace below 3.0 V. Neutralise lithium leakage with bicarbonate of soda, not vinegar

Apple's own weight figure for this chassis is internally contradictory and should not be quoted. It prints "Without CD-ROM: 17 lb. With CD-ROM: 19 lb. (21.15 kg)" — 19 lb is 8.6 kg, not 21.15 kg, and 17/19 lb is what the LC 630 volume gives for a much smaller machine. The 21 kg / ~47 lb figure is the plausible one for a 15-inch all-in-one, and that is what this page carries, but it is flagged rather than presented as Apple's.

Apple's built-in display figures for the 5200 and 5300: 15-inch shadow mask, 12.8-inch viewable; dot pitch 0.28 mm; vertical frequency 66.7 Hz; active raster 9.5 × 7.3 in (240 × 185 mm); white point 9,300 K; shipping brightness 25 foot-lamberts; horizontal in-line gun configuration; aluminised P22 derivative phosphor. Video modes: 640 × 480 at 16-bit, 800 × 600 at 8-bit, and 832 × 624 at 8-bit — and 832 × 624 does not support video input, which is worth knowing before blaming a TV-tuner or video-in card that works at a lower resolution.

Apple's high-voltage adjustment — a real procedure, and only for this family
Unlike most Macintoshes, the 5200 and 5300 do have a published voltage adjustment, and Apple marks every page of it "not for 5260, 5280":

# Leave the monitor on for at least 10 minutes first.
# Run the Display Service Utility and display the crosshatch test pattern.
# Find diode D713 (Rev. A) or D703 (Rev. B) on the analogue board.
# Red (positive) meter lead to the cathode side of that diode; black lead to the metal chassis ground.
# With a fine-tip plastic tool, set the high-voltage control — VR501 on Rev. A, VR702 on Rev. B — so the meter reads 29.5 V DC ± 0.1 V.

Apple's notes: the control is inside the analogue board, the Rev. B board has to be tilted back to reach VR702, and the adjustment must be redone whenever the CRT or the deflection board is replaced.

This is not a rail adjustment. 29.5 V at that diode is a sense point for the EHT, not a power-supply rail. Apple publishes no rail tolerance for this machine, and the "+5 V 4.85–5.15 V / +12 V 11.90–12.75 V" pair that circulates on this wiki is its Macintosh Plus and 128K/512K procedure, measured at the external drive port with voltage test cable 077-0135.
