IBM Mobile Systems Hardware Maintenance Manual, Volume 1: Laptop, Notebook, Portable and ThinkPad Computers, form number S82G-1501-01, part number 30H2356, Second Edition (May 1995). 503 pages.
The IBM Mobile Systems Hardware Maintenance Manual, Volume 1: Laptop, Notebook, Portable and ThinkPad Computers is IBM's 503-page service manual for its early portables, form number S82G-1501-01, part number 30H2356, Second Edition (May 1995). It replaced the earlier IBM Laptop, Notebook, and Portable Computers Vol. 1 (82G1501).

This is the first of the four-volume Mobile Systems set and the one that covers IBM's pre-ThinkPad portables alongside the earliest ThinkPads. Its title page lists: Laptop L40SX (8543), Laptop CL57 (8554), Notebook N45SL (2614), Notebook N51XX (8551), Portable P70/P75 (8573), ThinkPad 300 (2615), 350 (2618), 500 (2603), 510 (2604), 710T (2523), the Expansion Unit (3550) and Dock Station I (3545) and II (3546).
The title page lists the machines it supports: the Laptop L40 SX (8543), Laptop CL57 SX (8554), Notebook N45SL (2614), Notebook N51 SX/SLC (8551), Portable P70/P75 (8573), ThinkPad 300 (2615), ThinkPad 350 and PS/Note 425 (2618), ThinkPad 500 (2603), ThinkPad 510 (2604), ThinkPad 710T (2523), the Expansion Unit (3550) and Dock Stations I (3545) and II (3546). The later ThinkPads (340, 355, 360, 370, 700, 701, 720, 750, 755) are in Volume 2.

IBM's ThinkPad hardware maintenance manuals all follow the same plan, and knowing it saves hunting:
The Introduction (pp. 1-20) applies to the whole volume. It has a table of every portable by type-model with processor, memory and disk (pp. 2-3), the FRU replacement strategy (p. 4), the hard disk replacement strategy and how to read POST error messages (p. 5), the diskette drive compatibility matrix (p. 6), multilingual safety notices (p. 7), safety information including the safety inspection guide and ESD handling (pp. 14-18), and a screw size chart that identifies each screw by letter and colour (pp. 19-20).

* About this manual and Introduction — the strategy for replacing FRUs (reinstall the original part if the replacement does not fix the fault; if a machine has both a processor board and a system board, put the first one back before trying the second; remove multi-FRU assemblies one part at a time), how to use error messages, and the diskette compatibility matrix.
Each machine then has its own section in the same order: General Checkout, Symptom-to-FRU Index, Related Service Procedures, Product Overview, FRU Removals and Replacements, Locations and Parts Listing.
* Safety information — general and electrical safety, the safety inspection guide, ESD handling, grounding requirements and the laser compliance statement, with the safety notices repeated in every supported language.
* General descriptions and Related service information — restoring the preloaded system, passwords (including what can and cannot be cleared), and power management.
* Checkout guide — testing the computer, detecting system information with PC-Doctor, and the power system checkout: checking the AC adapter, operational charging, the main battery pack and the backup battery, each with its own measurement.
* Product overview — specifications, status indicators, FRU tests and the Fn key combinations.
* Symptom-to-FRU index — numeric error codes, error messages, beep symptoms, LCD-related symptoms, intermittent problems and undetermined problems.
* FRU replacement notices — the screw notices (torque and thread-lock rules, which matter on magnesium frames) and retaining serial numbers.
* Removing and replacing a FRU — the numbered 10xx sequence, which must be followed in order because later steps assume earlier ones.
* Locations — front, rear and bottom views by machine type.
* Parts list — FRU part numbers, including the keyboard and LCD part numbers by country and panel supplier.

In this volume the per-machine sections follow the older IBM pamphlet order — General Checkout, Symptom-to-FRU Index, Related Service Procedures, Product Overview, FRU Removals and Replacements, Locations, Parts Listing — and each machine gets a complete set.

The introduction also carries the portable computer descriptions, the drive and diskette compatibility matrix and a screw size chart, which apply across the whole volume.
The front matter lists the separate Hardware Maintenance Reference and Service pamphlets for each of these machines, with part and form numbers, and the reference and diagnostic diskettes (pp. iv-v).

Module level, and firmly so. These manuals name FRU part numbers, not component values. Across a typical ThinkPad maintenance manual the word "capacitor" appears once, in the ESD handling note. There is no schematic, no board layout, no parts list below FRU level and no component data of any kind. A system board is one line item with one part number.
The manual works at FRU level. The parts listings give IBM part numbers for boards, drives, covers, cables and screws, and a system board is a single part. There are no schematics and no component values; the only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide. The diagnostic diskettes it refers to are not part of the scan.

That is IBM's service model, not a gap in the scan, and it is why no ThinkPad on this wiki has a component-level capacitor list. If you need a board-level repair on a ThinkPad, this manual will tell you which board and how to get it out; it will not tell you what is on it.

The power system checkouts give measured limits. For the L40 SX (pp. 29-31): AC adapter output +14.3 to +15.8 V dc; rechargeable battery +8.5 to +12.6 V dc, with 4 to 30 kΩ between the thermistor terminal and ground; backup battery +2.8 to +3.2 V dc; standby battery +3.0 to +4.5 V dc after a 48-hour charge. For the P70 and P75 (p. 149), which run from mains, the supply limits are +4.8 to +5.2 V and +11.5 to +12.6 V.

The FRU replacement strategy (p. 4) is IBM's own rule for all of these machines: if a replacement FRU does not cure the fault, refit the original before going on; where a machine has both a processor board and a system board, put the first board back before trying the other; and where an adapter is made of several FRUs, remove them one at a time and replace only the one that changes the symptom.

This is where the PS/2 P70 and P75 (8573) are serviced as mobile machines. The P70 386 HMR and HMS pamphlets cover the same hardware from the PS/2 side; this volume is the later and fuller treatment. The same applies to the N45 SL (2614), which also has its own pamphlet as IBM PS2 N45 SL Hardware Maintenance Reference.
The P70 386 and P75 486 also have their own pamphlets, listed in this volume's related publications: the P70 386 HMR (64F3994) and HMS (15F2198), and for the P75 the HMR 84F8525 and HMS 84F7593. The N45SL has IBM PS2 N45 SL Hardware Maintenance Reference (42G0485).
