The Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display volume of Apple's Service Source is a 101-page service manual. The PDF was distilled on 21 December 1995.

Specifications as printed

Item Value
Picture tube 17 in diagonal Trinitron, 16.1 in viewable; bonded glass panel with antiglare/antistatic multilayer coating; 0.26 mm stripe pitch
Screen resolution 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 832 x 624, 1024 x 768
Scan rates vertical refresh 50-150 Hz; horizontal 29-82 kHz; Macintosh, XGA, VGA, SVGA and VESA compatible
Video input RGB analogue RS-343A, 0.714 V p-p positive-going; sync on green 0.286 V ±10%; separate or composite sync 1-5 V p-p, either polarity
Mains universal, 90-132 and 198-260 VAC self-configuring, 47-63 Hz
Power 150 W maximum
Size / weight 16.5 in (424 mm) H x 15.8 in (405 mm) W x 17.6 in (452.3 mm) D; 50.0 lb (22.5 kg)
I/O ports two ADB ports plus one ADB pass-through; microphone input and pass-through; headphone/speaker input and pass-through

Being a Trinitron, this tube has damper wires: one or two faint horizontal lines across the screen are a property of the aperture grille, not a fault.

The EEPROM, and why it matters before you swap a board

The Basics chapter opens with EEPROM Settings, and the Troubleshooting chapter carries a Display Setting Restoration procedure in three parts: connect the hardware, save the EEPROM information, and restore it. This display stores its geometry and convergence alignment in non-volatile memory on the microprocessor board. Save the EEPROM contents before replacing a board, or the replacement will need a full factory realignment that the field procedure does not cover.

Contents

  • Exploded View (pdf pp. 100-101)

What this manual does not contain

No parts list, no schematic, no component values, no fuse rating. The high-voltage figure is not printed. Board-level repair is not described; every fault resolves to a board exchange plus an EEPROM restore.

A CRT display holds a lethal charge on the anode after the mains is removed. Follow CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside one.
