IBM PS2 Model P75 486 Quick Reference
The IBM PS/2 Model P75 486 Quick Reference, First Edition (October 1990), is the 130-page user handbook for the PS/2 Model P75 486 (8573), the luggable 486 Micro Channel machine with a gas-plasma display. It is not a service manual.
What it contains
- Setting up, connecting and disconnecting the machine safely, with IBM's connect and disconnect sequences.
- Plasma Display Information and Plasma Display Brightness — the 16-level greyscale VGA-resolution gas-plasma panel and how to get the best out of it.
- The IBM Disk Cache and the other performance-enhancement sections.
- Operation, configuration from the Reference Diskette, and the user-level problem list.
What it does not contain
No text layer — an image-only scan.
No FRU numbers, no removals, no symptom-to-FRU index, no schematic and no component values. This is the book that shipped in the box.
What it settles
A safety fact worth propagating. IBM's own caution in this book reads: "The plasma display panel contains a small amount of mercury, cadmium, and lead. Follow your local ordinances or regulations for its proper disposal." That applies to the P70 386 as well as the P75 486, and it is the reason a broken plasma panel is not ordinary waste.
