IBM Personal Systems Reference — IBM ThinkPad Notebooks, 1992 to 2001 — withdrawn, January 2001, Version 214, published by IBM PC Institute. 87 pages.

This is a PSREF configuration reference, not a service manual: specification tables for every ThinkPad withdrawn from marketing between 1992 and 2001, one column per type-model.

What it contains

For each machine, a full specification column: processor and clock, processor features and upgradability, L2 cache and its organisation, diskette drive, CD-ROM and DVD options, memory, display, disk, communications, battery, weight and the type-model numbers with their announcement dates.

The ThinkPad 240 entry is typical — Intel Mobile Celeron 300, 366 or 400 MHz on a 66 MHz bus, no upgrade processor (ball grid array), 128 KB full-speed synchronous pipelined burst ECC write-back L2 on board, external 3.5-inch 1.44 MB diskette drive connecting to the left-side FDD port, and optional external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM via the Portable Drive Bay — against type-models 2609-21U, 2609-31U and the rest.

What it does not contain

No service content at all: no FRU numbers, no removals, no symptom-to-FRU index, no voltages, no schematics, no component values.

It covers only machines withdrawn by January 2001, so the A30, A31, R-series, T30 and later X-series are not in it — those are in the 2005 volume.

What it settles

This is how to turn a ThinkPad type-model number into a specification for the 1992–2001 machines, which in turn tells you which hardware maintenance manual applies. The maintenance manuals are organised by machine type, and the badge on the lid often is not enough to identify it.
