The Macintosh Performa 5430 is an all-in-one personal computer manufactured by Apple Computer, Inc., introduced on August 1, 1996.[1] It is an upgraded variant of the Performa 5400CD with a faster 160 MHz processor and 8X CD-ROM drive, sold exclusively in Europe.
The Performa 5430 is also known as the Performa 5400/160 and shares the same Alchemy logic board as the base 5400CD, but with the faster processor option.
Differences from Performa 5400CD
The Performa 5430 differs from the Performa 5400CD in the following ways:
- CPU Speed: 160 MHz (vs 120 MHz)
- CD-ROM: 8X (vs 4X)
- Display Resolution: Supports 800×600 at 16-bit (vs 640×480)
- Market: Europe only
- Introduction: August 1996 (vs April 1996)
Architecture and Processor
The Performa 5430 uses a PowerPC 603e processor running at 160 MHz on a 40 MHz system bus. The 603e is a 32-bit processor with a 64-bit data path and integrated floating-point unit.

Apple's metric weight is printed as "19 lb. (21.15 kg)" in this volume and in the 5200/5300 and 5260/5280 volumes. 19 lb is 8.6 kg, so the metric figure is an error in Apple's own text and is not repeated here.[2]
The Adjustments chapter for this family is Light Meter Setup, Geometry, Video and Focus — it contains no rail-voltage adjustment and no rail-tolerance table. The controls Apple names are VR701 (horizontal shift) with the three-position centring switch SW701, VR601, and on the CRT video board VR301, VR302 red gain, VR303 green gain, VR304 red bias and VR305 green bias, set with a plastic tool against the Display Service Utility's All-White Screen.[2]
Memory is not interchangeable across the range even though the sockets look identical: the 5400/120, 5400/160 and 5400/180 take 168-pin, 70 ns or faster, 2K refresh DIMMs, while the 5400/200 and the 5500s take 168-pin, 60 ns or faster, 5-volt buffered EDO DIMMs.[2]
