RetroTechCollection:Redirect
A redirect is a page that sends readers straight on to another page. RetroTechCollection uses redirects so that readers who search for another name, model number or spelling still reach the right page.
When to create a redirect
edit- Alternative names and model numbers that readers search for.
- Other spellings and capitalisations.
- Shortcuts to project pages, such as RTC:COPYVIO for RetroTechCollection:Copyright violations.
- Merged duplicates: when two pages about the same thing are merged, the page that was merged away becomes a redirect to the one that was kept, so its history and incoming links still work. For example, Macintosh Performa 5300 redirects to Macintosh Performa 5300CD.
- A section of a longer page that covers the subject.
Redirects from implausible typos can be deleted under criterion R2 of the Deletion policy.
Creating a redirect
editCreate the page with this as its only content:
#REDIRECT [[Target page]]
To send readers to a section, add the heading: #REDIRECT [[Target page#Section heading]]. Renaming that heading breaks the redirect, so check Special:WhatLinksHere before renaming a heading.
When a page is moved to a new title, MediaWiki leaves a redirect at the old title.
Looking after redirects
edit- After a move or a merge, check Special:DoubleRedirects and point each redirect straight at the final page.
- Special:BrokenRedirects lists redirects whose target does not exist. Fix them, or tag them for deletion under criterion R1.
- A link that goes through a redirect works. There is no need to change links just to bypass one.
