The Macintosh Performa 636 is a personal computer manufactured by Apple Computer and released on July 18, 1994.[1] It is a rebrand of the Macintosh LC 630 sold exclusively to the higher-education market.

The Performa 636 was the lowest-priced model in the 630 series, lacking a CD-ROM drive and sold without a bundled display.

Target Market

Unlike other Performa models sold through consumer retail channels, the Performa 636 was available only through higher-education sales channels (colleges and universities).[2]

Architecture and Processor

The Performa 636 uses a Motorola 68LC040 processor running at 33 MHz. The system bus operates at 33 MHz.

Memory and Storage

The system ships with 4 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board. A single 72-pin SIMM socket allows expansion up to 36 MB total using 80 ns non-parity SIMMs.

Storage includes a 250 MB IDE hard drive and 1.44 MB SuperDrive floppy. No CD-ROM drive is included.

Display and Graphics

1 MB of dedicated DRAM for video. Supported resolutions:

  • 512×384, 640×480: 16-bit color
  • 800×600, 832×624: 8-bit color
