What it settles

  • The PC2086's own power supply is documented, with a power supply chassis schematic diagram on page 18 and a power/switch PCB drawing on page 9 — so this is a machine whose supply can be repaired from the manual rather than replaced blind.
  • The schematics are split by function, not by sheet number, which makes tracing a fault far quicker: memory and disc controller, expansion bus, printer port, support controller, video, keyboard controller and keyboard each have their own drawing.
  • Six separate monitor sections, each with its own alignment instructions and its own electrical parts list — the /O and /D suffixes distinguish two builds of the same nominal monitor, and their parts lists are not interchangeable. Check which build is in front of you before ordering parts or comparing a drawing.
  • Two of the monitor sections note that alignment instructions will be published as an amendment — so for the PC12 MD/D and PC12 HRCD/D those procedures are absent from this edition by Amstrad's own admission, not lost.

What this manual does not contain

  • Alignment instructions for the PC12 MD/D and PC12 HRCD/D, as noted above.
  • No floppy or hard disc drive service data.
  • No fault-symptom table or diagnostic flowchart for the computer.
  • No coverage of the PC2286, PC2386 or PC2640.
