Atari 600XL General Maintenance

This guide covers general maintenance procedures for the Atari 600XL home computer. Regular maintenance will help preserve the system and prevent common failures associated with ageing components.

Power Supply

The Atari 600XL uses an external regulated +5V DC power supply (Atari part number CO61982), the same unit used by the Atari 800XL. The power supply connects via a barrel connector on the rear of the unit.

Power Supply Maintenance

  • Inspect the barrel connector regularly for signs of corrosion, discolouration, or loose fit. A poor connection can cause intermittent power delivery, leading to erratic behaviour or data corruption.
  • Check the power cable for fraying, cracking, or damage to the insulation. The original Atari power supplies are now over 40 years old and the cables may have become brittle.
  • Measure the output voltage with a multimeter before connecting to the computer. The output should read between +4.9V and +5.1V DC under no load. Voltages outside this range indicate a failing power supply.
  • Consider a modern replacement power supply. The original units may have degraded electrolytic capacitors that affect voltage regulation. Modern switchmode replacements rated at +5V DC, 2A or greater are recommended.

Keyboard Care

The 600XL uses a membrane keyboard with rubber dome switches beneath individual key caps. While more robust than the flat membrane of the Atari 400, it still requires care.

Cleaning the Keyboard

  1. Remove the key caps carefully using a small flat tool or key puller. They pull straight up from the rubber domes.
  2. Clean the key caps with warm water and mild detergent. Allow to dry completely before reassembly.
  3. Clean the membrane contacts using isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 99%) on a lint-free cloth. Do not use excessive moisture.
  4. Inspect the rubber domes for cracking, deformation, or loss of elasticity. Damaged domes will result in keys that do not register or feel "mushy."
  5. Reassemble by pressing key caps firmly back onto the dome stems, ensuring correct alignment.

Common Keyboard Issues

  • Dead keys — Often caused by dirty or oxidised membrane contacts. Clean with IPA and a cotton bud.
  • Entire keyboard unresponsive — Check the CD4051 multiplexer ICs at positions U22 and U23. These are the most common cause of total keyboard failure on the 600XL. Replacement CD4051BE or CD4051BCN ICs are readily available and inexpensive.
  • Intermittent key presses — May indicate degraded rubber domes or a poor connection between the membrane layers. Contact cleaner spray (e.g., DeoxIT D5) applied sparingly between the membrane layers can help.

Connector Inspection

Regular inspection of all connectors is important for reliable operation.

SIO Port

The SIO (Serial Input/Output) port is the primary peripheral connection. Inspect for:

  • Bent or broken pins — The SIO connector has 13 pins. Bent pins can cause connection failures with disk drives, printers, and cassette recorders.
  • Corrosion — Clean with IPA and a small brush if green or white deposits are visible.
  • Loose socket — The SIO port is soldered directly to the PCB. Cracked solder joints can cause intermittent connectivity. Reflow solder joints if necessary.

Joystick Ports

The two DE-9 joystick ports should be inspected for:

  • Bent pins — Straighten carefully with fine pliers if necessary.
  • Corrosion — Clean contacts with IPA.
  • Loose mounting — Ensure the port housings are firmly attached to the case.

Cartridge Slot

  • Clean the edge connector contacts with IPA on a cotton bud. Oxidised contacts are a common cause of cartridge read failures.
  • Inspect for debris — Dust and foreign objects can prevent proper cartridge seating.
  • Check the slot spring tension — Cartridges should seat firmly without excessive force.

PBI (Parallel Bus Interface) Connector

The 50-pin PBI edge connector on the rear is the expansion port:

  • Clean the edge connector fingers with IPA if installing expansion modules.
  • Inspect for oxidation — The exposed edge connector is particularly susceptible to tarnishing.
  • Check for bent or damaged contact springs if peripherals are not being detected.

RAM Expansion Care

Many 600XL units have been upgraded from 16 KB to 64 KB via internal modifications or the external Atari 1064 Memory Module.

Internal RAM Upgrades

If the unit has been internally upgraded:

  • Inspect solder joints on any added wires or IC sockets. Poor soldering is the most common cause of failure in modified units.
  • Check IC socket contacts — If upgrade RAM chips are in sockets, remove and reseat them periodically to prevent oxidation-related contact failures. Consider replacing single-wipe sockets with dual-wipe types for improved reliability.
  • Verify RAM chip compatibility — Acceptable DRAM chips for the 600XL include 4164, 4264, 4464 (for 64 KB upgrades), and 41256 (which will function at the required density). The speed rating should be 200ns (-20) or faster.

Atari 1064 Memory Module

If using the external 1064 module:

  • Clean the PBI connector on both the module and the 600XL before installation.
  • Ensure a secure fit — The module should sit flush against the rear of the computer.
  • Inspect the module's PCB for signs of capacitor leakage or corrosion.

IC Socket Maintenance

The 600XL uses socketed ICs for the CPU, custom chips, and ROM. The factory-installed sockets are single-wipe types known for poor long-term reliability.

  • Periodically reseat all socketed ICs — Power off the unit, remove each chip carefully using an IC extractor, clean the pins with IPA, and reinsert. This prevents oxidation buildup on the contacts.
  • Consider upgrading to machine-pin (dual-wipe) sockets — This is especially recommended for the ANTIC, GTIA, and POKEY chips, which are increasingly difficult to source as replacements.
  • Apply contact enhancer (e.g., DeoxIT Gold) to socket contacts after cleaning for long-term protection.
