LC 630/Quadra 630/ Performa 640 Service Source

The LC 630/Quadra 630/Performa 640 volume of Apple's Service Source is a 141-page service manual whose title page lists the machines it covers as the Macintosh LC 630, Macintosh LC 630 DOS Compatible, Macintosh Performa 640 DOS Compatible and the Quadra 630. The PDF's internal creation date reads 30 August 1956, which is impossible; the file belongs to the mid-1990s Service Source distillation runs and that date should not be quoted.

Its Basics chapter is more useful than most: it contains logic board diagrams and a shield/wiring harness drawing, which is as close to a board map as Apple published for this family.

Addressing is 32-bit registers, 32-bit address bus and 32-bit data bus throughout. DRAM: 4 MB built in with 8 MB optional, expandable to 36 MB if the logic board has only one SIMM slot (part number 661-0158), or to 52 MB if it has two (one regular SIMM slot and one single-sided SIMM slot, part number 661-1114). The LC 630 DOS Compatible ships with 8 MB, 4 MB built in plus a 4 MB DRAM SIMM.

Those two logic-board part numbers are the practical point: the maximum memory depends on which board is fitted, and the board can be identified by its part number rather than by counting slots blind.

Physical: 4.3 in (10.95 cm) H x 16.5 in (41.95 cm) W x 12.6 in (32 cm) D; 17 lb (7.7 kg) without a CD-ROM drive.

What this manual does not contain

No parts list of passive components, no schematic and no component values. The logic board diagrams are locators, not circuit diagrams. No supply-rail voltages or tolerances and no fuse rating are printed.

A caution about the battery. Apple names no battery part, voltage or replace-below threshold anywhere in the 630 documentation. Bare numbers that appear in the symptom chart next to instructions such as "Unplug 4.5 battery" are section cross-references in Apple's own numbering, not voltages - the same instruction is printed as "Unplug 5.4 battery" elsewhere in the same family of manuals. Do not read a battery voltage out of this manual.
