Macintosh IIcx/IIci/ Quadra 700 Service Source

From RetroTechCollection

The Macintosh IIcx/IIci/Quadra 700 Service Source is Apple's 79-page service manual for the Macintosh IIcx, Macintosh IIci and Macintosh Quadra 700, which share one case design. The PDF was produced on 22 November 1995. Like other Service Source volumes it works at module level: specifications, symptom charts, take-apart and upgrade procedures, with no schematics or component values. Page numbers below are the PDF's.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • Battery: replace if it reads below 2.8 V on the 10 V DC range; the cover, power supply and drive mount come out first (pp. 70-71).
  • Thermal shutdown: with blocked side or top vents the thermal protection circuit shuts the system down; it recovers after 30-40 minutes (p. 19).
  • For a dark screen on a IIcx or IIci, one of Apple's checks is "Make sure ROM jumper is on" (pp. 20-21).
  • SCSI: an external device must not be set to ID 7 or the internal drive's ID, and the internal drive must have a terminator (p. 25). A Quadra 700 shipped without a hard drive has a termination block on the logic board SCSI connector, removed when a drive is fitted (p. 77).
  • Upgrades: the IIci kit for the IIcx is a IIci logic board, 80 ns fast-page-mode SIMMs, a new bottom case and hard drive power cable, and Apple warns that the IIcx's 120 ns SIMMs will not work in the IIci. The Quadra 700 kit is a logic board, bottom case and power cable, also needing 80 ns SIMMs. The Quadra 700's processor-direct slot takes the Power Macintosh Upgrade Card (pp. 56-68).
  • Opening the case: one Phillips screw at the rear, then pull up the tabs and lift the cover off from the front (p. 31).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

No schematic, no component values and no module part numbers: the exploded view names the modules but gives part numbers only for a few screws and fittings (p. 79). No power-supply voltages, tolerances or adjustments. Nothing on the IIci's cache card or parity options; those are in the Macintosh IIci Developer Note.
