The document held under this title is a Schneider service manual, not an Amstrad-branded one: "Kundendienst-Handbuch / Service Manual, PERSONAL COMPUTER PC 2640, Ident-Nr.: 36523". 42 pages, German with English column headings throughout, and a text layer. The last page is a Schneider Service-Information notice, number 884433.

Schneider distributed Amstrad's machines in German-speaking Europe and later built its own; the PC 2640 is documented here in Schneider's house style, with order numbers and price groups rather than component values.

What it settles

  • The PC 2640 is an 80286 machine. The CPU board parts list gives U63 as an 80286-12, with 41256-12 DRAMs at U1–U9 and U12–U20, 4164-12 DRAMs at U23–U31 and U33–U41, an 80C42C keyboard controller at U32, 27128-15 EPROMs at U44 and U45, and a Chips and Technologies chipset — 82C201 (U56), 82C202 (U49), 82A203.12 (U51), 82A204 (U64), 82A205.12 (U53) and 82C206 (U50) — plus a PAL20R6 at U54.
  • Crystals are listed with frequencies: 32.768 kHz and 14.318 MHz on one board, 15 MHz and 10 MHz on the other.
  • The jumper and DIP switch page gives Schneider's factory default settings for both boards — the fastest way to recover a machine somebody has reconfigured.
  • Schneider's own service policy, printed on the last page: in the event of a fault, return the complete system unit or the complete board set (CPU, Multi I/O, SLOT).

What this manual does not contain

  • No capacitors and no component values. This is the important limitation. The parts lists cover ICs, resistor networks (by designator, not by value), crystals, connectors, cables, mechanical parts and assemblies — and not one capacitor appears in any of them. Values for passives must be read off the schematics or the board.
  • No power supply data. The supply is a single line item, "Netzteil / Power supply".
  • No alignment, adjustment or fault-finding procedures and no diagnostic flowchart.
  • No monitor coverage.
  • Prices are given as price-group letters, not figures, so the list carries no cost information.
