Apple MessagePad 2000 and 2100 Service Source

The Apple MessagePad volume of Apple's Service Source covers the Apple MessagePad 2000 and MessagePad 2100. It is a 19-page PDF made in FrameMaker; the file's creation date is 5 November 1997.[1] An earlier edition for the MessagePad 2000 alone, dated 18 February 1997, is held by UNNA as 2000Specs.pdf; it gives the processor clock as 167.9 MHz where this edition gives 162 MHz.[2]

What it settles

  • Processor: StrongARM SA-110 at 162 MHz (p. 8).
  • Memory: 4 MB RAM on the 2000 and 8 MB on the 2100, 8 MB mask ROM (p. 9). The Overview describes the 2000's read/write space as 3 MB (1 MB DRAM, 2 MB FEPROM), expandable to 8 MB (p. 4); Apple's February 1997 data sheet gives 5 MB (1 MB DRAM, 4 MB Flash).
  • I/O: one Newton InterConnect port for serial, audio and telephone I/O; two Type II PC Card slots for 3.3 V and 5 V cards (p. 10).
  • Display: transflective LCD, 480 × 320, with EL backlight; 0.26 mm dot pitch and 16 grey levels; 8 ohm speaker (pp. 4, 11).
  • Power: four AA alkaline cells or a NiMH pack; 24 hours continuous use from the pack, 100 hours idle with the backlight off (pp. 4, 12).
  • Size: 210.3 × 118.7 × 27.5 mm; under 1.8 lb with the NiMH pack (p. 13).

What this manual does not contain

No take-apart procedure, exploded view, part numbers, schematic or voltages. The 2000 and 2100 were serviced by whole-unit exchange (p. 3).[1] Circuit-level information is on the Apple MessagePad 2000 Q EVT2 Schematic.
