IBM Proprinter 420X Service Information and Parts Catalog
Proprinters: Service Information and Parts Catalog is IBM's service and parts manual for the Proprinter family of dot-matrix printers, document number SA38-0099-02, Third Edition (November 1993). The PDF has 68 pages. It is a text conversion of IBM's softcopy edition: pages are numbered within each topic ("1.15 - 1") and the 22 illustrations are replaced by "PICTURE" placeholders. The edition notice says IBM prepared it "for the use of customer engineers in the installation, maintenance, or repair of the specific machines indicated".
The machine identification table (topic 1.1) covers the 9-wire Proprinter (4201-001), Proprinter II (4201-002), Proprinter III (4201-003), Proprinter XL (4202-001), II XL (4202-002) and III XL (4202-003), and the 24-wire Proprinter X24 (4207-001), X24E (4207-002), XL24 (4208-001), XL24E (4208-002) and Proprinter 24P (4212-001). The title's "420X" is IBM's name for the common parts of the 4201 to 4208 printers (topic 3.1).

Procedures a repairer can use
edit- Initialization (1.2.1): for the 4201 and 4202 model 003 and the 4207 and 4208 model 002, IBM says to run this before replacing any FRU when the printer shows missing or wrong characters, bad spacing, forms or head motor failures, shifting margins or is locked in Propark mode. With the printer off, paper out and the head at the far left, hold the two blue keys (Propark and NLQ) while switching on, and release them when the panel lights flash in rotation. It resets the soft switch settings, so print them first (1.7).
- Print head to platen adjustment (1.16.1): recommended when fitting a new print unit (new units come unadjusted), when the left margin shifts to the right, or when head impact varies across the page. A 1-inch square of 20 lb paper is the gauge: with the forms-thickness lever at 1 there should be slight drag, and at 2 none. Parallelism is set with a 5 mm Allen key on the rear guide rod bushing in the right side-frame.
- Sheetfeeder drive gear kit 51F3712 (1.15): repairs narrow and wide sheetfeeders whose main drive gear mounting stud is damaged or broken.
What this manual does not contain
editThere are no schematics, no component values and no board-level parts list: the logic card, power supply and motors are FRUs in the parts catalogue. The illustrations, including the adjustment drawings and the exploded assembly views, are missing from this PDF, so the parts lists have no pictures to go with their index numbers.
