Acorn A3010, A3020 and A4000 Service Manual

The Acorn A3010, A3020 and A4000 Module Level Service Manual (Acorn part number 0494,059, ISBN 1 85250 109 X, Issue 1, 1993) is Acorn's dealer service manual for the Acorn Archimedes A4000 and its A3010 and A3020 siblings. All three are built on closely related ARM250 boards, so Acorn documented them together.

What it contains

Fault diagnosis and repair — the test equipment list, the flowchart for checking a 'dead' computer, and what to do if the PSU or the main PCB is at fault.
Disassembly and assembly — separate procedures for the A3010/A3020 keyboard-case machines (top cover, keyboard, metal safety case, floppy drive, hard disc, speaker, PCB) and for the A4000 three-box machine (top cover, speaker, drive tray, PCB, front moulding, PSU, floppy drive, hard disc).
Software test suite (Appendix E) — audio, battery-backed RAM, disc interface, external ports, hard disc exerciser and initialiser, hardware check, IDE interface, joystick, keyboard and mouse, memory, real time, UHF modulator and video tests, each with the action to take on failure.
Test tools (Appendix F) — backing up the test disc, validating the test equipment, creating a test IDE hard disc, and saving and restoring the customer's CMOS RAM settings.
Safety tests — earth continuity (separate procedures for the A4000 and for the A3010/A3020) and DC insulation testing for class 1 equipment.

What it does not contain

It is a module level manual, written for dealers who replace assemblies rather than components. It does not document the power supply internally, and it gives no upgrade or expansion fitting instructions.
