Apple II Reference Manual
The Apple II Reference Manual (Apple Computer, Inc., 1979) is the original "Red Book" reference for the Apple II and Apple II Plus. It is the primary source for most of the hard numbers on this wiki's Apple II pages.
What is in it
[edit | edit source]- Power supply (page 92) - Apple's own specification for the switch-mode supply covered by U.S. Patent 4,130,862: input 107-132 VAC or 214-264 VAC (switch selectable); supply voltages +5.0, +11.8, -12.0 and -5.2; full-load output +5 V at 2.5 A, -5 V at 250 mA, +12 V at 1.5 A (about 2.5 A intermittent) and -12 V at 250 mA; 60 W maximum at full load, 79 W intermittent; operating temperature 55 degrees C. Apple published no per-rail tolerance band anywhere in this manual.
- Main board - three rows of eight RAM sockets (row C frontmost, then D, then E), six ROM sockets above them, three memory configuration blocks at D1, E1 and F1, and eight peripheral slots numbered 0 to 7.
- ROM - the 74LS138 at F12 selects the individual ROMs; the ROMs are similar to the 2316 and 2716 but the chip-select polarity differs, so ordinary 2716 EPROMs cannot be plugged straight into the board. Figure 13 gives the 9316B pinout.
- RAM - nine supported configurations (4K, 8K, 12K, 16K, 20K, 24K, 32K, 36K and 48K) built from Mostek 4096-family 4K parts or 4116-type 16K parts.
- Keyboard - MM5740 keyboard decoder ROM, 7404 buffers, a 7400 scan oscillator at keyboard location U4 and a 555 at U3 generating the 10 Hz repeat.
- System timing - 14.31818 MHz master oscillator, 7.159 MHz, 3.58 MHz colour reference and the 1.023 MHz phase 0 and phase 1 system clocks.
