Apple Technical Note HW 8 Color Monitor Connections
Appearance
Macintosh Technical Note HW 8, "Color Monitor Connections" is a four-page Apple Developer Support note written by Mark Baumwell in July 1987 and revised by Jim Luther and Wayne Correia in February 1991. It describes how to connect the Macintosh II Video Card, the Macintosh IIci's built-in video and the Macintosh LC to monitors from other makers.[1]
Contents
[edit | edit source]- Table 1 (p. 1): pin assignments of the DB-15 connector on the Macintosh II Video Cards and the IIci's built-in video. A note gives the order numbers of the original four- and eight-bit Macintosh II Video Card (M0211 and M5640) and of the High-Resolution Display Video Card that replaced it (M0322 and M0324), and says the early card had no sense lines.[1]
- Sense notes (pp. 1-2): the newer Macintosh II cards and the IIci need pin 4 grounded for a 640 × 480 monitor, with pins 7 and 10 left open.[1]
- Table 2 (p. 2): the Macintosh LC connector. Pins 3 and 15 carry composite sync for an Apple monitor or horizontal sync for a VGA monitor, and the LC grounds pin 7 internally. Pin 4 grounded selects 640 × 480, pins 4 and 10 grounded the 12-inch RGB display, and pin 10 grounded a VGA monitor. The LC does not put vertical sync on the green signal.[1]
- Adapter cables (p. 3): wiring for a Macintosh II to the Sony Multiscan CPD-1302 and the NEC MultiSync JC-140IP3A, both with 9-pin connectors and sync on green. The NEC must be set to analog and manual mode; the same cable suits the Taxan Super Vision 770.[1]
- Macintosh LC to VGA (pp. 3-4): the LC drives a VGA monitor in 16 colours, or 256 with the 512K VRAM SIMM; some low-impedance VGA monitors do not work; the cable wiring, with pins 7 and 10 joined.[1]
What this note does not contain
[edit | edit source]It covers only the Macintosh II cards, the IIci and the LC. It has no table of sense codes for other monitor types, which Technical Note HW 30 gives, and no part numbers for Apple's own cables.[1]
