Energizer's manufacturer handbook for primary alkaline cells (alkaline-manganese dioxide), 2018 revision. It is the source this wiki uses when it needs to say what is actually inside an AA cell, rather than repeating folklore.
What is in it
[edit | edit source]- Cell construction: high-surface-area zinc anode, high-density manganese dioxide cathode and a potassium hydroxide electrolyte. The nylon seal is the cell's safety vent.
- The cell reaction, and the fact that hydrogen is a normal by-product of every alkaline cell - low under normal use, high under abuse such as attempted charging or a short circuit. This matters for sealed battery compartments.
- Recommended operating range -18 to 55 degrees C.
- Care and handling: remove cells from equipment that will be stored; inspect battery compartments every few months for leakage; do not mix old and new cells or different makes; do not attempt to recharge a primary cell; clean contact surfaces with a pencil eraser or cloth.
