Goldstar GDO-202 Troubleshooting Guide

The Goldstar GDO-202 shares its case, power supply design and capacitor problems with the GDO-101M, but has a different disc drive and the Anvil chipset.[1][2] No GoldStar service information for it has been found. Use the Goldstar GDO-101M Troubleshooting Guide for the power supply and general checks, and the notes below for what is specific to the GDO-202.
Things that are not faults
[edit | edit source]- A GDO-202 will not play a CD-R. It detects recordable discs and refuses them by design; only the GDO-202 and GDO-203 do this.[3] Test the drive with pressed discs.
- The GDO-202P is a PAL console. NTSC-only games and televisions may not work with it, and the Anvil NTSC/PAL conversion has not been documented for this model.[3][4]
Power supply
[edit | edit source]The GDO-202P's supply has a 4700 µF reservoir and two 1000 µF capacitors, the values of the GDO-101M's 6870S-263AA board.[5][6] Check the board number, then use the GDO-101M measurements: about 18 V on the reservoir, 11.88 V and 5.05 V at the output connector.[7] The 3DO Development Repo lists all of the electrolytics as a common failure on the GDO-202.[3]
Access light stays on and the console will not boot
[edit | edit source]One owner's GDO-202P developed this fault after weeks of booting copied discs by pressing on the spinning disc. On switch-on the access light stayed lit, the tray would not open and the console stopped at the 3DO logo, even with the drive unplugged. Left on for several minutes it sometimes reached the menu, but would not then read a retail disc. Replacing the three power supply capacitors made no difference.[5]
The fault was not resolved in the thread. The suggestions were a full recap, since failing capacitors fit a fault that changes with time, and a check of the spindle: pressing on a spinning disc can push the platter down its shaft, so that the disc no longer sits at the right height above the laser. The platter can be slid back up.[5]
Disc tray and drive
[edit | edit source]Tray eject faults are listed as common on the GDO-101 and GDO-202.[3] The GDO-202's drive is not the GDO-101's Sanyo mechanism, so the GDO-101M's part numbers and printed gears do not apply.[1][8] The laser has not been identified; read the part number off the pickup before ordering a replacement.[9] On the GDO-202P the flexible cable to the laser does not move with the drive and has not been a reported failure.[5]
