IBM Monitor Repair Notes (Models 8512, 8513, 8514)
IBM Monitor Repair Notes is a 28-page printout of the sci.electronics.repair FAQ page of the same name, by Frank Reid (Indiana University), first released 14 August 1990 and revised repeatedly to February 1995 (document version 1.00, internal version 1.02).
Two things to know before citing it. It is not an IBM document — it is a community repair FAQ, printed from a web browser, and it should be cited as a secondary source. And it covers six models, not the three in this page's title: 8512, 8513, 8514, 5154, 5175 and 3192.
It is nonetheless the most component-specific material on this wiki for the 8512 and 8513, for the reason the author gives: "Schematic diagrams are apparently unavailable."
What it contains
[edit | edit source]- Chapter 2, 8512 and 8513 — opening the cases (two internal plastic clips, or tamperproof Torx T-20 screws with centre pins needing a long slender driver), and the degaussing thermistor failures.
- Chapter 3, bad power supply in the models where the supply is a separate unit in a gold-coloured metal cage.
- Chapter 4, 8512 serial 72- — the extensively shielded version with the grey metal power supply housing.
- Chapter 5, IBM 8514 — far more reliable than the 8512 and 8513; the squealing/unstable-picture fault and its fix.
- Chapter 6, IBM 5154 and 5175 — the EGA and PGA monitors, nearly identical apart from the video electronics in a metal box on the left side.
- Chapters 7 and 8, the 3192 CRT terminal, including a "major meltdown" section on other semiconductors and the CRT-board video drivers.
- Chapter 9 — cable A603 to the CRT board.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]No schematics, no full parts lists, no FRU catalogue and no IBM part numbers except where the author quotes one. It is a working repairer's notes, not documentation: the coverage is uneven, the models are those the author happened to have on his bench, and parts and supplier information from 1990–1995 is long out of date. Several of the suppliers and offers named in it no longer exist.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]Because it is the only component-level source here for these monitors, the specifics are worth recording — as this author's findings, not as manufacturer data:
- Pincushion distortion on an 8512/8513 after a few years' service, with the internal E/W and Width adjustments inoperative: replace C225, 22 µF 50 V 105 °C.
- Fluctuating brightness on an 8513 with a 72- serial: R477, 3.3 MΩ ¼ W, fails from high-voltage breakdown. It sits between the flyback and the aluminium heatsink of the horizontal output transistor. Replace with the same value at ½ W, or two 1.6 MΩ ¼ W in series.
- Burned R203 on an 8513 with a 23- serial: 120 Ω ¼ W, and resolder C202 — its joints break from vibration or from being knocked during disassembly.
- Dim or absent red on a 23- serial 8513: resolder the "red cut" control RV801 on the CRT board, which the manufacturer fitted badly on a large batch.
- Out of focus on a 72- serial 8513 with the flyback focus control at the end of its travel: replace the flyback, type TFB-185A. The replacement may show two controls; the one labelled SCREEN is a dummy.
- 8514 squealing with a vertically unstable picture: replace the small electrolytics in the power supply, with high-temperature types.
- Degaussing thermistor shorts are the commonest 3192 failure and are shared with the 8512 and 8513. IBM did not sell replacements; the author used the NEC 1401 monitor part, NEC 381-12026, "positive thermistor degaussing control".
- 3192 with no picture and repetitive clicking or beeping: the high-voltage divider between flyback and CRT anode, IBM part number 6405282.
- IBM's own ECA notices for these monitors are 8512 ECA026 and 8513 ECA017 (a replacement offer for specific serial ranges, long expired).
- The 8513's VGA connector pinout, including pin 5 self-test — which produces a white raster when the cable is disconnected — and 75 Ω video termination.
One lead worth following: the author states that schematics for the 5154 (EGA) and 5175 (PGA) displays are available from IBM, in Technical Reference, Options and Adapters, Volume 3 of the Personal Computer Hardware Reference Library. Several Options and Adapters sections are already hosted on this wiki.
