IBM PC 5150 Hardware Maintenance and Service (August 1981)

From RetroTechCollection

The Hardware Maintenance and Service manual is IBM's field service manual for the IBM Personal Computer (5150), First Edition (August 1981), part of the Personal Computer Hardware Reference Library. Minuszerodegrees.net, which supplied the scan, gives its part number as 6025072. The hosted PDF has 357 pages. It covers the system unit with the first (16KB-64KB) system board, the 83-key keyboard, the IBM Monochrome Display, the 5.25-inch diskette drive, the option adapters of 1981 and the IBM 80 CPS Matrix Printer (5152). It works to field replaceable unit (FRU) level: each chart ends by naming a part to replace.

The manual's preface names its companions as the Guide to Operations (part 6025003), the Technical Reference (6025008) and BASIC (6025013), and expects the reader to use a Triplett Model 310 multimeter or equivalent (front matter and p. i).

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]
  • No schematics, component values or capacitor lists. The system board, power supply and drive boards are replaced as units.
  • Only the first system board. A note added by the scan's supplier on PDF page 1 says that pages 200-3 and 200-4 do not apply to the later 64KB-256KB board, that the system board part number on p. 4-7 is for the 16KB-64KB board, and that the SW2 settings on pp. 5-6 and 5-8 no longer apply once the BIOS has been upgraded to the third revision (U33 marked 1501476; the first two are 5700051 and 5700671).
  • No fixed disk, 5161 Expansion Unit, IBM Color Display (5153) or later options. These are in IBM Hardware Maintenance Service (March 1986).
  • The Advanced Diagnostics diskette that the charts call for is not part of the scan.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • IBM's service limits for the 5150 supply at the system board and drive connectors, and the minimum system board resistances with the supply disconnected (pp. 020-5 to 020-9).
  • That the system unit has no preventive maintenance schedule (p. 6-1).
  • IBM's drive belt check and fitting procedure (pp. 600-25, 3-15).
