IBM PS2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC Hardware Maintenance Reference

The IBM PS/2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC service pamphlet, part number 10G6624, form number S84F-7767-01, Second Edition (March 1992), dated 17 March 1992.

This is the Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlet, not the Hardware Maintenance Reference. Its own front matter says so: "This pamphlet contains a Symptom-to-FRU Index, a parts listing, and procedures for isolating problems to a FRU for the IBM Personal System/2 Models 40 SX and 40 SLC", and its running header reads "IBM PS/2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC HMS". The page title here is kept because other pages link to it, but the document is the HMS.

What it contains

  • 1.0 General Checkout — diagnosing combined FRUs, using error messages, and disabling the power-on password.
  • 2.0 Undetermined Problem.
  • 3.0 Power Supply — the full bench procedure, below, with the P1, P2 and drive connector 1–4 pin tables.
  • 4.0 Display, 5.0 Installed Devices List, 6.0 Keyboard, 7.0 Printer, 8.0 Memory.
  • 9.0 Fixed Disk Drive Switch/Jumper Settings — separately for jumper-type drives, 40 MB switch-type drives and 80 MB switch-type drives.

What it does not contain

Module level only. IBM serviced these machines by field-replaceable-unit exchange, and this pamphlet reflects that: it names FRU part numbers, not component values. There is no capacitor list, no resistor list, no semiconductor list and no schematic anywhere in it. The power supply, the planar and each drive are single line items in the parts catalogue. This is why no IBM machine checked in this wiki's verification drive has a published component-level capacitor list — it is not that the manuals were lost, it is that IBM never wrote one.

It is also not a standalone book. IBM issued it as a pamphlet to be filed in a binder alongside the general-purpose IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference (part number 15F2190, form number S15F-2190-00) and Hardware Maintenance Service (part number 15F2200, form number S15F-2200-00), which carry the safety information, the general checkout procedure and the option and adapter sections. Those two general volumes are not hosted here.

What it settles

How to test the supply out of the machine. Power off and unplug, remove every power supply connector from the planar and the drives, then put a meter across the planar pins corresponding to P2-4 and P2-6: there must be continuity with the power switch on and none with it off. If not, replace the control panel assembly, which includes the switch. If the switch is good, short P2 pin 4 to pin 6, reconnect the system board power cord, and measure. P1 pins 1 and 2 are +5 V, limits +4.8 to +5.25 Vdc, pins 3 and 4 ground; P2 pins 1 and 2 are +12 V, limits +9 to +15 Vdc.

That shorting step is the detail worth having: these supplies will not run unloaded without it, and the usual "it is dead" diagnosis is often just an unswitched supply.
