Two corrections to this page's title. It is the Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlet — its running header reads "IBM PS/2 Model 56 SX and 56 SLC HMS" — and it covers four models, not two: "the IBM Personal System/2 Models 56 SX, 56 LS, 56 SLC and 56 SLC LS".

What it contains

  • 5.0 Power Supply — the bench procedure with the P1, P2 and drive connector 1–2 pin tables.
  • 6.0 SCSI Device Settings; 7.0 Printer; 8.0 Display; 9.0 Keyboard; 10.0 Cached Processor Option; 11.0 Memory including interleaved memory configurations; 12.0 Ethernet Network Adapter.
  • 13.0 Symptom-to-FRU Index — no-beep symptoms, beep symptoms, miscellaneous symptoms, numeric error codes and the I999XXXX error codes.
  • 14.0 How To Use This Parts Catalog; 15.0 System Overview; 16.0 Parts.

What it does not contain

Module level only. IBM serviced these machines by field-replaceable-unit exchange, and this pamphlet reflects that: it names FRU part numbers, not component values. There is no capacitor list, no resistor list, no semiconductor list and no schematic anywhere in it. The power supply, the planar and each drive are single line items in the parts catalogue. This is why no IBM machine checked in this wiki's verification drive has a published component-level capacitor list — it is not that the manuals were lost, it is that IBM never wrote one.

It is also not a standalone book. IBM issued it as a pamphlet to be filed in a binder alongside the general-purpose IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference (part number 15F2190, form number S15F-2190-00) and Hardware Maintenance Service (part number 15F2200, form number S15F-2200-00), which carry the safety information, the general checkout procedure and the option and adapter sections. Those two general volumes are not hosted here.

What it settles

The same supply-test trick as the Model 40 pamphlet: with all connectors off, check continuity across the planar pins for P2-4 and P2-6 with the switch on and off (no continuity either way means the control assembly, including the switch, is the FRU), then short P2 pin 4 to pin 6 to make the supply run and measure. P1 pins 1 and 2 are +5 V with limits +4.8 to +5.25 Vdc; pins 3 and 4 are ground. IBM's first check is the power-good light and the fan, not a meter.
