IBM PS2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC Hardware Maintenance Service

From RetroTechCollection

The hosted file, IBM PS2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC HMR.pdf, is IBM's PS/2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlet, dated 17 March 1992, part number 10G6624, form number S84F-7767-01, Second Edition. It is a Hardware Maintenance Service (HMS) pamphlet, not a Hardware Maintenance Reference: its front page says it "contains a Symptom-to-FRU Index, a parts listing, and procedures for isolating problems to a FRU", and every page is headed "IBM PS/2 Model 40 SX and 40 SLC HMS". The hosted copy is a 34-page PDF made in 2009 from IBM's BookManager edition, numbered by topic.

The front page says it is to be used with the IBM Personal System/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference (part number 15F2190, form number S15F-2190-00) and Hardware Maintenance Service (part number 15F2200, form number S15F-2200-00); safety information is in the Hardware Maintenance Service General Information pamphlet. None of these is hosted here.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

There are no removal procedures, schematics or component values; the supply and the system board are single FRUs.

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

IBM's supply check (3.0): power off and unplug, disconnect every supply connector from the system board and drives, and check the power switch with a meter across P2 pins 4 and 6 (continuity with the switch on, none with it off; otherwise replace the control panel assembly, which includes the switch). Pin 4 of P2 is the on/off signal, so for the voltage check short P2 pin 4 to pin 6, reconnect the power cord and measure:

Supply limits, Model 40 SX and 40 SLC HMS, 3.1-3.3
Connector and pins Output Minimum Maximum
P1 pins 1, 2 +5 V +4.8 V +5.25 V
P2 pins 1, 2 +12 V +9 V +15 V
P2 pin 5 −12 V −9 V −15 V
P2 pin 7 −5 V −4.8 V −5.25 V
Drive connector pin 1 +12 V +9 V +15 V
Drive connector pin 4 +5 V +4.8 V +5.25 V

P2 pin 3 is Power Good and pin 6 ground; P1 pins 3 and 4 are ground. If any voltage is wrong IBM replaces the supply; if all are right, another component may be shutting the supply off.
