IBM PS2 Model 56 SX and 56 SLC Hardware Maintenance Service

From RetroTechCollection

The hosted file, IBM PS2 Model 56 SX and 56 SLC HMR.pdf, is IBM's PS/2 Model 56 SX and 56 SLC Hardware Maintenance Service pamphlet, dated 25 February 1992, part number 10G6003, form number S04G-3296-02, Third Edition, copyright 1992. It is a Hardware Maintenance Service (HMS) pamphlet, not a Hardware Maintenance Reference: every page is headed "IBM PS/2 Model 56 SX and 56 SLC HMS", and the front page says it contains "a Symptom-to-FRU Index, procedures for isolating problems to a FRU, and a parts listing" for the Models 56 SX, 56 LS, 56 SLC and 56 SLC LS (type 9556). The hosted copy is a 48-page PDF made in 2009 from IBM's BookManager edition, numbered by topic.

The front page says it is to be used with the PS/2 Hardware Maintenance Reference (15F2190, S15F-2190-00, SBOF-3989) and Hardware Maintenance Service (15F2200, S15F-2200-00, SBOF-3988) manuals, which are not hosted here.

What this manual does not contain

There are no removal procedures, schematics or component values; the supply is a single FRU.

What it settles

IBM's supply check (5.0) starts with the power-good light and the fan, then the power cord. To test the supply, disconnect P1, P2 and the drive connectors, check the power switch with a meter across the system-board pins for P2 pins 4 and 6 (continuity with the switch on, none with it off; otherwise replace the control assembly including the switch), then short P2 pin 4 (the on/off signal) to pin 6 (ground), reconnect the power cord and measure:

Supply limits, Model 56 HMS 5.1-5.3
Connector and pins Output Minimum Maximum
P1 pins 1, 2 +5 V +4.8 V +5.25 V
P2 pins 1, 2 +12 V +11.52 V +12.6 V
P2 pin 5 −12 V −10.92 V −13.2 V
P2 pin 7 −5 V −4.75 V −5.5 V
Drive connector pin 1 +12 V +11.52 V +12.6 V
Drive connector pin 4 +5 V +4.8 V +5.25 V

P2 pin 3 is Power Good. If any voltage is wrong IBM replaces the supply. The Model 56 is a Micro Channel machine, yet its supply has a −5 V output on P2 pin 7.

A forgotten power-on password is cleared by moving the jumper on J18 (or J7), towards the rear of the board to the right of the bus adapter connector, to join the centre pin and the pin at the opposite end, then powering on; the jumper need not be moved back (2.0).
