IBM Personal System/2 and IBM Personal Computer Product Reference, Version 4.0, dated 20 September 1988. Published by IBM's National Distribution Division, Workstations Marketing (Department 7W7), White Plains, New York. 244 pages.

As noted on IBM PS2 and PC Product Reference (April 1987), both documents carry "Version 4.0" on the title page. Cite the date, not the version.

What it contains

  • Special promotional offerings — the RT CAD/CAM offering, the Personal Computer trade-in promotion and the Model 80 trial program.
  • Volume procurement and ordering terms for hardware and software, redistribution of PC software, and the corporate service maintenance amendment.
  • IBM SolutionPac offerings — LAN Implementation Services I to III, Branch Banking Automation, 4680 installation and the Construction Industry Series.
  • Processors — Personal System/2 (Micro Channel models) with their features, memory, tape backup devices, miscellaneous features, displays and attachments, and the image device attachment.
  • IBM PC processors and features, adapters and communications attachments (twinaxial S/36 and S/38, coaxial), and Operating System/2 software with its compilers and support publications.
  • AIX PS/2 relational database offerings (ORACLE, INGRES).

What it does not contain

This is a marketing and price reference, not a technical or service document. It carries no FRU numbers, no rail voltages, no removal procedures, no schematics and no component values. It is a list of what IBM sold, under what agreements, at what list price, on a given date, and IBM says on the first page that the prices are for information only and subject to change.

What it settles

Its value is the same as the April 1987 volume, eighteen months later and after the Micro Channel range had filled out: part numbers and availability as of September 1988, including the support publications listed against each processor family.
