IBM Technical Directory PC and PS2 (June 1988)
The IBM Technical Directory for the Personal Computer and Personal System/2, June 1988, is a 15-page IBM catalogue of the technical publications then available, with part numbers, form numbers and list prices.
It is short, and it is the single most efficient cross-check in this collection for a form number or a price.
What it contains
[edit | edit source]- Guide To Operations and Quick Reference manuals — basic operation, testing, relocation and option installation; a diagnostic diskette was included with each.
- Hardware Maintenance Libraries — IBM explains the structure: each library "includes a service manual, a reference manual, and supplements", for trained service representatives. The Personal Computer library (which IBM notes covers the PS/2 Model 25 and Model 30 as well as the PC, XT, AT and Portable) is listed at part number 6280087, form number 5229-9603.
- Hardware Technical Reference manuals for both lines, with editions marked.
- Notes on what has changed since the previous issue — in this issue, the arrival of the PS/2 Models 50, 55, 60, 70 and 80 material.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]A catalogue, not documentation. No technical content, no FRUs, no procedures. The prices are June 1988 list prices in US dollars.
What it settles
[edit | edit source]Two things worth recording:
- The PS/2 Models 25 and 30 were serviced under the Personal Computer hardware maintenance library, not the PS/2 one. IBM groups them with the PC, XT, AT and Portable. That is consistent with what the technical references show — the 8525 and 8530 are ISA machines with a −5 V rail, unlike the Micro Channel models — and it tells you which binder a service procedure for those two machines will be in.
- The structure of a hardware maintenance library: service manual + reference manual + supplements. That explains why so many of the pamphlets on this wiki say "use this with part number 15F2190 and 15F2200" — they are supplements, and were never meant to stand alone.
