What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The Basics chapter says all large-screen monitors distort with their surroundings: nearby metal changes the effect of the earth's magnetic field at the screen edges, and fluorescent lights and appliances cause jitter. Apple says to check for environmental causes first, because swapping modules cannot fix environmental distortion and adjusting such a monitor alters the factory settings; move or turn the monitor, or try it in another building, before adjusting. Geometry set-up is done with the monitor facing magnetic east or west.[3]

There are two main-board revisions and they must be replaced like for like. If vendor part number A-1335-028 appears near connector D3, the replacement is 661-1634; otherwise it is the Rev. B board, 661-1671. When fitting a CRT/video board, switch SW1 must be set as shown, or the colour adjustments will be wrong and green will be oversaturated.[4]

The video set-up and white balance target 24 foot-lamberts (±3) on the all-white screen, and cutoff is set with the screen control RV508. Apple's adjustment tool is part number 949-0386.[5]

The exploded view gives Apple part numbers: CRT assembly 076-0563, CRT/video board 661-1635, main board 661-1634 or 661-1671 (Rev. B), fuse 922-0516, focus control 982-0139, AC inlet assembly 076-0077, contrast/brightness assembly 982-0127, video cable 590-0734 and base PC assembly 981-0029.[6] The fuse sits on the main board.[7]

The Take Apart procedures begin with discharging the CRT and warn never to use a grounding wrist strap until the CRT has been discharged. See CRT Discharge Procedure.[1]
