What it settles

[edit | edit source]
  • For cutoff, warm the monitor for at least 10 minutes, display the Gray Bars pattern from Display Service Utility, set contrast to maximum and brightness to its centre detent, and set G2 so that the first bar is black and the second barely visible. Apple says to repeat the cutoff adjustment whenever the CRT assembly or main board is replaced (pp. 63-66).
  • The sub-contrast control is set for 30 ± 3 foot-lamberts on an all-white screen, which Apple converts for its three light meters: 23 on the bottom scale of the R77, the middle of the 10 scale on the L-248, and 23 on the red scale of the 246 (pp. 71-72).
  • A thin horizontal line about a third of the way up the picture is the aperture grille's support wire; Apple says it cannot be adjusted out or removed by replacing modules (p. 20).
  • The fuse is on the main board and is prised out with a small screwdriver after discharging the CRT (pp. 51-52).

The exploded view gives part numbers: main deflection board 661-0102 (with Energy Star), 661-1650 (without Energy Star) and 661-0169 (Rev. B); CRT assembly 661-1666; fuse 922-0004; power cable 590-0370; video cable 922-0035 (p. 96).

What this manual does not contain

A CRT holds a dangerous charge on the anode after the mains is removed. Follow CRT Discharge Procedure before working inside one. Apple warns not to wear a grounding wrist strap until the CRT has been discharged (p. 51).
