Performa/Power Macintosh 6400 and 6500 Series Service Source
Appearance
The Performa/Power Macintosh 6400 and 6500 Series volume of Apple's Service Source is a 232-page service manual for the Performa 6400/180 and 6400/200, the Power Macintosh 6400/180, 6400/200, 6500/225, 6500/250, 6500/275 and 6500/300, and the international Performa 6410 and 6420. The PDF was produced in FrameMaker and is dated 19 February 1997.
Like other Service Source volumes, it works at module level: a Basics chapter describing the family, specifications, symptom charts, take-apart procedures, upgrades, additional procedures and an exploded view.

What it settles
[edit | edit source]- The supply is switched manually: set the voltage switch to 115 for 100–130 V and 230 for 200–270 V, and Apple warns that a wrong setting can damage the computer. Basics includes a table of mains voltages by country (Voltage Switch, PDF pp. 17–19).
- Power Macintosh 6500 video faults. Video jitter (pixels shimmering at the edges of the screen, windows and dialogs) affects 225 and 250 MHz boards and is cured by a reworked logic board, 661-1322 (225 MHz) or 661-1332 (250 MHz). Blurry video over the whole screen at 832 × 624 and above is cured by the audio/monitor connection subassembly 922-2996. Apple gives the blur serial range as XB708xxxxx to XB723xxxxx; the jitter range is XB708 to XB719 in the symptom chart and XB708 to XB718 in Additional Procedures (PDF pp. 79–80, 217–223).
- For poor video on a 6500, Apple's first check is that the resolution is 1152 × 870 or lower (symptom chart).
