Using the 64
Using the 64 is a book by Peter Gerrard in the Duckworth Home Computing series, published in London by Gerald Duckworth & Co. It was first published in September 1983; the hosted scan is the second impression of November 1983. ISBN 0-7156-1777-X.[1] The numbered pages run to 328.[2]
The book runs through BASIC and machine code on the Commodore 64, then covers colour, high-resolution and sprite graphics, sound and the common peripherals. The last three chapters describe the four main chips: the 6566 VIC-II, the 6581 SID, the 6510 processor and the 6526 CIA. The appendixes include memory maps, BASIC and 6510 instruction references, screen codes and a listing of an assembler/disassembler.[3][4] Appendix E gives the pin assignments of the control ports, cartridge expansion slot, audio/video socket, serial port, cassette port and user port, with the 100 mA limit on the +5 V and 9 V AC pins.[5]

What this book does not contain
[edit | edit source]Apart from the connector pinouts in Appendix E it is a programming book. It has no schematic, parts list or component values; for those use the Commodore 64 / 64C Service Manual. The same author's Sprites & Sound on the 64 is in the same series.
