No FRU numbers, no removals, no symptom-to-FRU index, no schematic and no component values. This is the book that shipped in the box.
* The front-matter caution: "The plasma display panel contains a small amount of mercury, cadmium, and lead. Follow your local ordinances or regulations for its proper disposal." IBM prints the same note in the removal procedure for the P70 386 plasma-display assembly ([[IBM PS2 Model P70 386 Hardware Maintenance Reference|P70 386 HMR]], procedure 1050).
* Plasma display (p. 54): 640 × 480 VGA, shown in up to 16 monochrome shades; CGA and EGA programs do not fill the screen.
* Battery (p. 106): lithium, to be replaced only with IBM part 64F9987. Removing it loses the configuration, and the backup Reference Diskette must then be run so the machine can configure itself.

'''A safety fact worth propagating.''' IBM's own caution in this book reads: "The plasma display panel contains a small amount of '''mercury, cadmium, and lead'''. Follow your local ordinances or regulations for its proper disposal." That applies to the P70 386 as well as the P75 486, and it is the reason a broken plasma panel is not ordinary waste.
There are no FRU numbers other than the battery, no service removals beyond user-installable options, no symptom-to-FRU index, no schematic and no component values. Service information for the 8573 family is in [[IBM Mobile Systems Hardware Maintenance Manual Volume 1]].

Useful to a repairer

[edit | edit source]
  • The front-matter caution: "The plasma display panel contains a small amount of mercury, cadmium, and lead. Follow your local ordinances or regulations for its proper disposal." IBM prints the same note in the removal procedure for the P70 386 plasma-display assembly (P70 386 HMR, procedure 1050).
  • Plasma display (p. 54): 640 × 480 VGA, shown in up to 16 monochrome shades; CGA and EGA programs do not fill the screen.
  • Battery (p. 106): lithium, to be replaced only with IBM part 64F9987. Removing it loses the configuration, and the backup Reference Diskette must then be run so the machine can configure itself.
