'''ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual''', '''September 2005''', part number '''39T5972''', '''First Edition'''. 152 pages.
The '''ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual''' of September 2005 is the hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad X40 series, part number 39T5972, First Edition (September 2005). The PDF has 152 pages: four front pages, 147 numbered pages and the back cover, which carries the part number.

It supports the '''ThinkPad X40 Series''', machine types '''2369, 2370, 2371, 2372, 2382 and 2386'''. Unlike the X30 family manual it lists no dock.
The title page lists one product: ThinkPad X40 Series (machine types 2369, 2370, 2371, 2372, 2382 and 2386). No dock is listed on the cover, but the specifications and the locations section cover the X4 UltraBase Dock. The edition notice reads "© Copyright Lenovo 2005. Portions © Copyright International Business Machines Corporation 2005", so this is a Lenovo publication for an IBM-branded machine.

'''A note on publisher.''' Lenovo acquired IBM's personal computer division on 1 May 2005. This manual's copyright line reads "© Copyright Lenovo ... Portions © Copyright International Business Machines Corporation", so it is a '''Lenovo publication for an IBM-branded machine'''. Cite it as such.

Page numbers are the manual's own.

IBM's ThinkPad hardware maintenance manuals all follow the same plan, and knowing it saves hunting:
* About this manual (p. 1).
* Introduction (pp. 3-26): strategy for replacing FRUs and hard disk drives, how to use error messages (pp. 3-4); strategy for replacing FRUs on configure-to-order (CTO), custom model variant (CMV) and general announce variant (GAV) machines (pp. 4-7); replacing RoHS-compliant FRUs (p. 7); diskette compatibility matrix (p. 8); safety notices in English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian and Spanish (pp. 8-19); general and electrical safety, safety inspection guide, handling of electrostatic discharge-sensitive devices, grounding requirements (pp. 20-25); laser compliance statement (p. 26).
* General descriptions (pp. 29-49): what to do first (p. 29); service web site, restoring the preloaded system (p. 31) and recovering the hard disk to original contents (p. 34); passwords (p. 37); power management (p. 39); checkout guide, testing the computer and PC-Doctor (pp. 42-46); power system checkout (pp. 46-49).
* ThinkPad X40 series (from p. 51): specifications (p. 53), status indicators (p. 55), FRU tests (p. 57), Fn key combinations (p. 59); symptom-to-FRU index with numeric error codes, error messages, beep and no-beep symptoms, LCD-related, intermittent and undetermined problems (pp. 61-72); FRU replacement notices, covering screw notices and retaining serial numbers (pp. 73-74).
* Removing and replacing a FRU (pp. 77-113): numbered procedures 1010 Battery pack to 1120 Fansink and 2010 LCD bezel to 2060 Bluetooth antenna cable. The backup battery is 1070 (p. 90), reached after removing the battery pack, hard disk drive, DIMM cover and keyboard.
* Locations (pp. 114-118): front, rear and bottom views of the X40, and front and rear views of the X4 UltraBase Dock.
* Parts list (pp. 119-144): overall FRU list (p. 119), LCD FRUs (p. 134), keyboards (p. 136), recovery CDs (p. 138), miscellaneous parts (p. 141), common parts list (p. 142).
* Notices (p. 145) and trademarks (p. 147).

* '''About this manual''' and '''Introduction''' — the '''strategy for replacing FRUs''' (reinstall the original part if the replacement does not fix the fault; if a machine has both a processor board and a system board, put the first one back before trying the second; remove multi-FRU assemblies one part at a time), how to use error messages, and the diskette compatibility matrix.
Like the [[IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 X32 Hardware Maintenance Manual|July 2005 X30/X31/X32 manual]], this edition has no model matrix; FRUs for a particular machine are identified through the CTO, CMV and GAV procedure (pp. 4-7).
* '''Safety information''' — general and electrical safety, the safety inspection guide, ESD handling, grounding requirements and the laser compliance statement, with the safety notices repeated in every supported language.
* '''General descriptions''' and '''Related service information''' — restoring the preloaded system, '''passwords''' (including what can and cannot be cleared), and '''power management'''.
* '''Checkout guide''' — testing the computer, detecting system information with PC-Doctor, and the '''power system checkout''': checking the AC adapter, operational charging, the main battery pack and the '''backup battery''', each with its own measurement.
* '''Product overview''' — specifications, status indicators, FRU tests and the Fn key combinations.
* '''Symptom-to-FRU index''' — numeric error codes, error messages, beep symptoms, '''LCD-related symptoms''', intermittent problems and undetermined problems.
* '''FRU replacement notices''' — the '''screw notices''' (torque and thread-lock rules, which matter on magnesium frames) and retaining serial numbers.
* '''Removing and replacing a FRU''' — the numbered 10xx sequence, which must be followed in order because later steps assume earlier ones.
* '''Locations''' — front, rear and bottom views by machine type.
* '''Parts list''' — FRU part numbers, including the keyboard and LCD part numbers by country and panel supplier.

'''Module level, and firmly so.''' These manuals name FRU part numbers, not component values. Across a typical ThinkPad maintenance manual the word "capacitor" appears '''once''', in the ESD handling note. There is '''no schematic, no board layout, no parts list below FRU level and no component data of any kind'''. A system board is one line item with one part number.
The manual works at FRU level. There are no schematics, no board layouts and no component values. The only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide (p. 23).

That is IBM's service model, not a gap in the scan, and it is why no ThinkPad on this wiki has a component-level capacitor list. If you need a board-level repair on a ThinkPad, this manual will tell you which board and how to get it out; it will not tell you what is on it.

The ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual of September 2005 is the hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad X40 series, part number 39T5972, First Edition (September 2005). The PDF has 152 pages: four front pages, 147 numbered pages and the back cover, which carries the part number.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

The manual works at FRU level. There are no schematics, no board layouts and no component values. The only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide (p. 23).

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The X40 battery pack is checked against different limits from the X30 and X31. The power system checkout (pp. 46-49) gives:

Power system checkout, ThinkPad X40 (pp. 47-49)
Item Measured at Correct reading
AC adapter Pin 1 to pin 2 (ground) of the adapter plug +15.5 to +17.0 V dc
Battery pack Terminal 1 (+) to terminal 5 (−) +0 to +16.8 V dc; discharged if below +14.4 V
Battery pack, above +14.4 V Resistance between terminals 4 and 5 4 to 30 kΩ
Backup battery Red wire (+) to black wire +2.5 to +3.2 V dc

The specifications (pp. 53-54) list Pentium M processors from 1.0 to 1.6 GHz, 256 MB or 512 MB of memory on board with one PC2700 SO-DIMM slot, Intel 855GME graphics, a 12.1-inch XGA panel, and a 1.8-inch IDE hard disk of 20, 40 or 60 GB.

The screw notices (p. 73) specify nylon-coated screws, used only once; the screw pack is P/N 13N5323 (p. 141). After a system board replacement the serial number must be written back with the ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Diskette version 1.71 or later (p. 74).
