Amstrad PC 2386 Service Manual: Difference between revisions

Real documentation page: cover title PC2386-65, contents, the full technical specification (20 MHz 80386, 64K/35 ns cache, five 16-bit slots, 65 MB 1:1 hard disc), the safety-test figures, and - most useful - Amstrad's own notes to engineers, which forbid component-level repair of the CPU PCB and the drives while explicitly permitting it on the PSU and monitors, which is why a PSU schematic is included

The '''PC2386-65 Personal Computer Service Manual''' is Amstrad plc's service manual for the PC2386. The contents list runs to page 48. The hosted scan has 46 pages and no text layer, and it ends at printed page 46. The two missing pages, the cabinet exploded view and parts list (p. 47) and the power supply chassis schematic (p. 48), are hosted separately as [[:File:Amstrad PC 2386 Service Manual pages 47-48.pdf]], taken from another scan of the manual.

'''Technical specification''': '''80386 at 20 MHz''', zero wait states, '''32-bit full-width main memory''', 80387 socket, '''4 MB of parity-checked RAM''', a '''64K / 35 ns RAM cache''', '''five 16-bit expansion slots''', asynchronous bus operation, a 65 MB hard disc option at 1:1 interleave, 1.4 MB floppy drives, connectors for an external 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch drive and a tape streamer, Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA compatible video, a bi-directional parallel printer port, an RS232 serial port, battery-backed clock and configuration RAM, a Microsoft-compatible mouse, a 101/102-key AT keyboard with a security lock, a speaker volume control, built-in LIM 4.0 with a RAM division option between conventional, extended and LIM, and Novell NetWare server compatibility. System unit 415 × 160 × 485 mm; keyboard 475 × 35 × 200 mm.
The specification on page 2 gives an 80386 at 20 MHz with 0.05 wait states, 32-bit memory, an 80387 socket, 4 MB of parity-checked RAM, a 64K 35 ns cache, five 16-bit expansion slots, 1.4 MB floppy drives, a 65 MB hard disc option, Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA-compatible video, built-in LIM 4.0, and MS-DOS 4.0 with Windows/386. The system unit measures 415 × 160 × 485 mm.

'''Amstrad's notes to engineers set the repair policy, and they are unusually blunt:'''
The alignment instructions (p. 3) are for the power supply and the clocks:

* "'''no component level repairs are to be carried out on Main CPU PCB'''. After diagnosis test if the fault is confirmed replace CPU PCB."
{| class="wikitable styled-table" style="width:80%; text-align:left;"
* The same applies to '''the floppy and hard disc drives''', and any attempt to repair or replace parts within them invalidates the warranty.
|+'''PC2386 alignment (p. 3)'''
* '''"PSU & Monitors are subject to component level repairs."'''
! Step !! Method
|-
| +5 V || Voltmeter at test point A; set VR604 to 5.00 V ±0.05 V
|-
| +12 V || Voltmeter at test point B; set VR603 to 12.00 V ±0.05 V
|-
| VCO control voltage || Voltmeter at pin 6 of IC316; set TC301 to 3.5 V
|-
| Primary protection || Turn VR601 anticlockwise until the protection starts to cut in, then back a little
|-
| Real-time clock || Timing meter at pin 21 of IC115, 0.2 s/day setting; set TC101 to read 0.00

That last sentence is why this manual includes a '''power supply chassis schematic diagram''' but treats the mainboard as an exchange unit. It is also a caution for anyone reading the electrical parts list: Amstrad expected it to be used for the supply and the peripherals, not for board-level repair of the CPU PCB.
The notes to engineers (p. 2) forbid component-level repair of the main CPU PCB, which is to be replaced once a fault is confirmed, and of the floppy and hard disc drives; "PSU & Monitors are subject to component level repairs." The safety tests are a 1.5 kV RMS flash test for 3 s, an insulation test requiring more than 4 MΩ and a mains-lead earth continuity of no more than 0.5 Ω.

'''Safety test figures''': flash test at '''1.5 kV RMS for 3 s''' between mains live/neutral and all accessible exterior metal; insulation resistance at the same voltage showing '''greater than 4 MΩ'''; and '''earth continuity of the mains lead not exceeding 0.5 Ω'''.
