'''IBM Mobile Systems — ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual''', '''January 2003''', part number '''92P1288''', '''First Edition'''. 176 pages.
The '''IBM Mobile Systems ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual''' of January 2003 is IBM's hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad X30 and X31, part number 92P1288, First Edition (January 2003). The PDF has 176 pages: four front pages, 171 numbered pages and the back cover, which carries the part number.

It supports '''ThinkPad X30 and X31 (MT 2672/2673)''', the '''ThinkPad Dock (MT 2631)''' and the '''ThinkPad Dock II (MT 2877)'''.
The title page lists the products supported: ThinkPad X30 and X31 (machine types 2672 and 2673), ThinkPad Dock (machine type 2631) and ThinkPad Dock II (machine type 2877). The model matrix (pp. 146-147) has both X30 and X31 models under both machine types. IBM used the same cover title for all its ThinkPad manuals of this period, so the "This manual supports" list is what identifies the book.

IBM's ThinkPad hardware maintenance manuals all follow the same plan, and knowing it saves hunting:
Page numbers are the manual's own.

* '''About this manual''' and '''Introduction''' — the '''strategy for replacing FRUs''' (reinstall the original part if the replacement does not fix the fault; if a machine has both a processor board and a system board, put the first one back before trying the second; remove multi-FRU assemblies one part at a time), how to use error messages, and the diskette compatibility matrix.
* About this manual (p. 1).
* '''Safety information''' — general and electrical safety, the safety inspection guide, ESD handling, grounding requirements and the laser compliance statement, with the safety notices repeated in every supported language.
* Introduction (pp. 3-26): strategy for replacing FRUs and how to use error messages (pp. 3-4); diskette compatibility matrix (p. 4); safety notices in English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian and Spanish (pp. 4-15); general and electrical safety, safety inspection guide, handling of electrostatic discharge-sensitive devices, grounding requirements (pp. 16-20); laser compliance statement (p. 21).
* '''General descriptions''' and '''Related service information''' — restoring the preloaded system, '''passwords''' (including what can and cannot be cleared), and '''power management'''.
* General descriptions (pp. 25-44): what to do first (p. 25); service web site, restoring the preloaded system on the X30 (p. 27) and recovering the hard disk on the X31 (p. 30); passwords (p. 32); power management (p. 35); checkout guide, testing the computer and PC-Doctor (pp. 38-41); power system checkout (pp. 42-44).
* '''Checkout guide''' — testing the computer, detecting system information with PC-Doctor, and the '''power system checkout''': checking the AC adapter, operational charging, the main battery pack and the '''backup battery''', each with its own measurement.
* ThinkPad X30, X31 (from p. 45): specifications (p. 47), status indicators for the X30 (p. 50) and X31 (p. 53), FRU tests (p. 55), Fn key combinations (p. 56); symptom-to-FRU index with numeric error codes, error messages, beep and no-beep symptoms, LCD-related, intermittent and undetermined problems (pp. 59-66); FRU replacement notices, covering screw notices and retaining serial numbers (pp. 67-68).

* '''Removing and replacing a FRU''' — the numbered 10xx sequence, which must be followed in order because later steps assume earlier ones.
* Notices and trademarks (p. 170).
* '''Locations''' — front, rear and bottom views by machine type.
* '''Parts list''' — FRU part numbers, including the keyboard and LCD part numbers by country and panel supplier.

'''Module level, and firmly so.''' These manuals name FRU part numbers, not component values. Across a typical ThinkPad maintenance manual the word "capacitor" appears '''once''', in the ESD handling note. There is '''no schematic, no board layout, no parts list below FRU level and no component data of any kind'''. A system board is one line item with one part number.
The manual works at FRU level. There are no schematics, no board layouts and no component values, and the system board is a single part number. The only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide (p. 19).

That is IBM's service model, not a gap in the scan, and it is why no ThinkPad on this wiki has a component-level capacitor list. If you need a board-level repair on a ThinkPad, this manual will tell you which board and how to get it out; it will not tell you what is on it.

A forgotten power-on password can be removed with the supervisor password (through the F1 prompt on the X30, the Access IBM button on the X31), or, where no supervisor password is set, by removing the battery pack and the backup battery and powering on until POST ends. A forgotten supervisor password has no reset procedure and the system board must be replaced. A forgotten user hard-disk password can be bypassed only with the master hard-disk password; without it IBM offers no reset or data recovery.

The screw notices (p. 67) specify nylon-coated screws, used only once, tightened 90 degrees past contact for plastic to plastic and 180 degrees for logic card to plastic, or to the torque in each removal step; the screw kit is P/N 27L6751 (p. 164). After a system board replacement the serial number must be written back with the ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Diskette version 1.69 (p. 68).

'''This is the IBM-era X30/X31 manual.''' The later [[IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 X32 Hardware Maintenance Manual]] (July 2005, part number 39T6189) is a Lenovo publication that adds the '''X32''' and machine types '''2884 and 2885'''. For an X30 or X31 either will serve; for an X32 you need the later one.
The later [[IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 X32 Hardware Maintenance Manual]] (July 2005, part number 39T6189) covers the same machines and docks and adds the X32 (machine types 2884 and 2885). For an X32, use that manual.

The IBM Mobile Systems ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual of January 2003 is IBM's hardware maintenance manual for the ThinkPad X30 and X31, part number 92P1288, First Edition (January 2003). The PDF has 176 pages: four front pages, 171 numbered pages and the back cover, which carries the part number.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

The manual works at FRU level. There are no schematics, no board layouts and no component values, and the system board is a single part number. The only capacitor mentioned is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide (p. 19).

What it settles

[edit | edit source]

The power system checkout (pp. 42-44) gives these limits:

Power system checkout, ThinkPad X30 and X31 (pp. 42-44)
Item Measured at Correct reading
AC adapter Pin 1 to pin 2 (ground) of the adapter plug +15.5 to +17.0 V dc
Battery pack Terminal 1 (+) to terminal 5 (−) +0 to +12.6 V dc; discharged if below +11.0 V
Battery pack, above +11.0 V Resistance between terminals 4 and 5 4 to 30 kΩ
Backup battery Red wire (+) to black wire +2.5 to +3.2 V dc

The password section (pp. 32-35) sets out what IBM would and would not reset.

The later IBM ThinkPad X30 X31 X32 Hardware Maintenance Manual (July 2005, part number 39T6189) covers the same machines and docks and adds the X32 (machine types 2884 and 2885). For an X32, use that manual.
