🏷️ Using categories
How to categorise articles on the RTC Wiki

Categories group related pages so that readers and editors can find them. Every article should have at least one category.

Adding a category

Add categories at the bottom of an article, one per line, with no blank lines between them:

[[Category:Apple Vintage Computers]]
[[Category:Compact Macintosh]]

Finding the right category

Browse Special:Categories to see every category. Check that a category exists before you use it: several plausible names do not.

Platform categories

Every page about a machine goes in its platform category.

Category For
Category:Apple Vintage Computers Apple II, Macintosh, Lisa and other Apple hardware
Category:Atari Systems Atari computers and consoles
Category:Commodore Systems Commodore computers
Category:Acorn Computers Acorn machines; BBC Micro pages also use Category:BBC Micro
Category:Sinclair Computers Sinclair computers
Category:Amstrad Amstrad computers
Category:IBM IBM personal computers and workstations
Category:Psion Psion organisers and handhelds
Category:Sega Systems Sega consoles and handhelds
Category:Nintendo Nintendo consoles and handhelds

The platform categories sit inside Category:Vintage Computers. Some platforms also have narrower categories, such as Category:Compact Macintosh or Category:Atari 8-bit.

Guide categories

Repair guides also go in a guide-type category as well as the platform category:

Page type Category
General maintenance Category:Maintenance Guides; Apple pages also Category:Apple Maintenance Guides
Troubleshooting Category:Troubleshooting Guides; Apple pages also Category:Apple Troubleshooting Guides
Capacitor replacement Category:Capacitor Replacement Guides
Other repair procedures Category:Repair Guides

Documentation categories

Service manuals go in the manufacturer's own category, such as Category:Apple Service Source, Category:Atari Service Manuals, Category:Commodore Technical Manuals, Category:IBM Service Manuals, Category:Acorn Service Manuals, Category:Amstrad Service Manuals, Category:Sega Service Manuals or Category:Nintendo Service Manuals. Use the top-level Category:Service Manuals only for documents that cover more than one manufacturer.

Categories not to use

Category:Apple Capacitor Guides, Category:Schematics and Category:Sega Maintenance Guides were created in error and are marked for deletion. Use Category:Capacitor Replacement Guides, the manufacturer's service manual category, and Category:Maintenance Guides instead.

Creating a new category

If no existing category fits:

  1. Add the category tag to your article: [[Category:New category name]]
  2. The category appears as a red link. Click it to create the category page.
  3. Add a short description and a parent category.

A basic category page:

A short description of what belongs in this category.

[[Category:Parent category]]

The main platform categories are curated landing pages with a header box and tables of models; see an existing one, such as Category:Atari Systems, before building a new platform category.

Tips

  • Use the most specific category that fits, and do not over-categorise.
  • Check for an existing category before creating one, to avoid duplicates.
  • Every article needs at least one category. Uncategorised pages are hard to find.
  • Category names are case-sensitive: "Apple vintage computers" is not the same category as "Apple Vintage Computers".
