This page's file is not what its title suggests. It is not a PS/2 technical overview or pocket reference. The 8-page document is IBM PC Institute's Personal Systems Reference — IBM PS/2, 1992 to 1995 — withdrawn, one of the PSREF configuration tables IBM's training arm published for its dealers and service outlets.

What it contains

Type-model configuration tables for the later PS/2 machines, with a column for each model and a row for each specification:

  • A summary table for PS/2 Models 53 to 57 — CPU and speed, L2 cache, upgradability, standard and maximum memory, video, diskette and disk (standard to maximum, internal, ms seek, interface), slots and bays, memory features and availability dates.
  • Per-model pages for the Model 53 (9553) and 53LS (9553 LAN Station), both 486SLC2.
  • Per-model pages for the Model 56 (9556), 56LS (9556 LAN Station), 57 (9557) and M57 (9557 Multimedia), all 486SLC3.

Each entry gives the full type-model number, which is how you confirm what a machine actually is from its label rather than its badge.

What it does not contain

Not a service document in any sense. No FRU numbers, no removals, no symptom-to-FRU index, no rail voltages, no schematic and no component values. It also covers only the 1992–1995 machines — nothing about the Models 25, 30, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80, 90 or 95 that the rest of this wiki's PS/2 material is about.

Its usefulness is narrow and real: identifying a late PS/2 from its type-model number and knowing what shipped in it.
