The LaserWriter Select volume of Apple's Service Source is a 256-page service manual for the LaserWriter Select 300, 310 and 360. The PDF's creation date is 26 October 1995.[1] It has board locator diagrams, a wiring diagram, a power-on self test and LED diagnostic, and troubleshooting tables that give expected voltages and resistances at named connector pins.

All three models share the electrical and physical figures: 100-115 V AC 50-60 Hz (US and Japan) or 220-240 V AC 50 Hz (Europe and Australia), 450 W maximum; 15 in wide, 18.3 in deep and 26.4 lb (12 kg). Apple prints the height as "8.0 in. (25.3 cm)"; the two figures do not agree. The operating range is 10-32.5 °C and 20-80% relative humidity. The 500-sheet feeder was introduced in August 1993. If a 16 MB SIMM is fitted to a Select 360, the 3 MB of soldered RAM is not used.[2]

What it settles
Power-on self test: the Select 310 and 360 run a POST at every switch-on and the Select 300 does not. The Ready LED goes out when the I/O controller board passes, the Paper-Out LED when the RAM passes, and the Jam LED when the engine passes; control then passes to the PostScript interpreter.[3]
Select 360 diagnostic: only the 360 has diagnostic LEDs. Switch it off, remove the jumper from JMP1 on the I/O controller if one is fitted, and set the rear-panel mode switch to 9. The repeating sequence is all LEDs on for one second, all off for one second, the error LED or LEDs on for one second, then all off. The six error patterns are I/O controller, SIMM, engine controller, fuser, laser and engine. A SIMM error can mean too little memory; the 360 needs at least 7 MB. Refit the JMP1 jumper and restore the mode switch afterwards.[4]
The symptom tables name the connector pin for each check. The main supply readings are taken at P11 on the DC controller board, with P11-2 (black) as ground:[5]
| Test point | Expected |
|---|---|
| P11-10 and P11-11 (brown) | +24 V DC with the front door closed, 0 V with it open |
| P11-12 (orange) | +24 V DC |
| P11-5 (yellow, 5 VB) and P11-6 (blue, 5 VA) | +5 V DC |
| P11-1 (HEAT, red) | about +4.2 V DC at switch-on; about +3.7 V with the door open, dropping briefly to 0 V about five seconds after closing it |
| Fuser J101-2 to J101-6, power on | 90-132 V AC |
| Fuser heater, J101-2 to J101-6, cold | less than 10 Ω |
| Fuser thermistor, J101-1 to J101-4 (or P11-13 to P11-14), room temperature | 200-350 kΩ |
| Main motor coils, P14-1 to P14-3 and P14-5, P14-2 to P14-4 and P14-6 | about 5 Ω |
| Scanner motor /MOT ON, P12-11 to P12-10 | below 1 V while printing, about 4 V when stopped |
The exploded view gives Apple part numbers: for example, fuser assembly 661-2008 (110/115 V) and 661-2009 (220/240 V), I/O boards 661-2000 (300), 661-2001 (310) and 661-0820 (360), DC controller boards 661-2002 (300/310) and 661-0821 (360), power supply 661-2006 (110/115 V) and 661-2007 (220/240 V), and high-voltage power supply 661-2005 (300/310) and 661-0822 (360).[6]
What this manual does not contain
There is no schematic and there are no component values. The circuit board diagrams locate connectors and switches, and the wiring diagram shows connections between assemblies with the signal and supply name on each pin. Apple notes that the wiring diagram is too small to read at 100% on screen and suggests zooming in or printing it at 300 dpi or better.[7] No fuse rating and no voltage tolerances are printed; the tables give nominal readings only.[1]
Safety
Apple's safety section says to switch off and unplug the printer before servicing, never to remove the laser/optic assembly cover or disconnect the beam-detect cable with the printer on, and never to take the laser/optic assembly apart. Switch the printer off for at least 5 minutes before working on the fuser. Do not run a Select 360 for longer than 10 minutes with the covers off.[8]
