Being a Trinitron, this tube has '''damper wires''': one or two faint horizontal lines across the screen are a property of the aperture grille, not a fault.

The Basics chapter opens with '''EEPROM Settings''', and the Troubleshooting chapter carries a '''Display Setting Restoration''' procedure in three parts: connect the hardware, save the EEPROM information, and restore it. This display stores its geometry and convergence alignment in non-volatile memory on the microprocessor board. '''Save the EEPROM contents before replacing a board''', or the replacement will need a full factory realignment that the field procedure does not cover.

The Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display volume of Apple's Service Source is a 101-page service manual for the Multiple Scan 17, a 17-inch Trinitron colour display with ADB and sound ports in its stand. The PDF was distilled on 21 December 1995.[1]

EEPROM settings

[edit | edit source]

Each Multiple Scan 17 has an EEPROM on the microprocessor board holding adjustment information specific to that display. Before replacing the microprocessor board, save the EEPROM with the MacTest Pro Display Setting Restore Utility over a mini-DIN-8 serial cable ("Create File"), fit the new board, then write the file back ("Write File"). A new board's default settings leave the display readable only with difficulty. Apple warns that if the settings are lost before they are written to the new EEPROM, the display cannot be repaired and must be replaced, and that a saved file must only be written back to the display it came from.[3]

Diagnostic notes from the manual

[edit | edit source]
  • The two thin horizontal lines about a quarter to a third of the way from the top and bottom of the picture are the support wires of the Trinitron aperture grille. They are not a defect and cannot be removed by repair.[4]
  • An oversized raster that the adjustments do not affect points to an early microprocessor board. On the component side, a nine-digit number ending -12 with a white mark, or -13 without one, is an updated board; -11, or -12 without a white mark, needs replacing (after saving the EEPROM).[4]
  • Colour blotches at the edges of a white screen and vertical jitter are usually caused by magnetic fields or interference in the surroundings; Apple's first step is to degauss and move the display.[4]
  • A display that shuts down shortly after power-up: with the rear cover and EMI shield off and the CRT discharged, pull the CRT/video board straight off the tube neck onto an insulating sheet and power up. If the power light stays on, the CRT is defective; if the display still shuts down, replace the main deflection board.[5]
