The IBM Mobile Systems ThinkPad 380XD (2635), ThinkPad 385XD (2635) Hardware Maintenance Manual is IBM's service manual for those two machines, form number S10L-9623-00, part number 10L9623, First Edition (May 1998), 132 pages. The earlier 380, 380D, 385 and 385D are in Volume 3 and Volume 4.

A dedicated manual for two machines, rather than a volume covering a dozen. The 380XD and 385XD are the Pentium II members of the 380/385 family; the earlier 380, 380D, 385 and 385D are in Volume 3 and Volume 4.
The product overview (pp. 22-23) lists the processor by model: the 380XD with a Pentium MMX at 233 MHz (2635-8xx, 9xx, Bxx) or 266 MHz (Axx), or a Pentium II at 233 MHz (Exx) or 266 MHz (Fxx); the 385XD with a Pentium MMX at 233 MHz (8xx) or 266 MHz (9xx), or a Pentium II at 266 MHz (Dxx). Standard memory is 32 MB on the system board, expandable to 96 MB.

IBM's ThinkPad hardware maintenance manuals all follow the same plan, and knowing it saves hunting:
Page numbers are the manual's own.

* About this manual and Introduction — the strategy for replacing FRUs (reinstall the original part if the replacement does not fix the fault; if a machine has both a processor board and a system board, put the first one back before trying the second; remove multi-FRU assemblies one part at a time), how to use error messages, and the diskette compatibility matrix.
* Introduction (pp. 3-17): error messages, multilingual safety notices (p. 5), safety information (p. 12), laser compliance statement (p. 17).
* Safety information — general and electrical safety, the safety inspection guide, ESD handling, grounding requirements and the laser compliance statement, with the safety notices repeated in every supported language.
* Read this first (p. 19) and product overview (pp. 22-23).
* General descriptions and Related service information — restoring the preloaded system, passwords (including what can and cannot be cleared), and power management.
* Checkout guide (p. 25): audio, diskette drive, fan, keyboard, memory, power systems (p. 29), status indicators, system board and CPU card, TrackPoint III; optional device checkout (p. 33); power management features (p. 35).
* Checkout guide — testing the computer, detecting system information with PC-Doctor, and the power system checkout: checking the AC adapter, operational charging, the main battery pack and the backup battery, each with its own measurement.
* Symptom-to-FRU index (p. 38): numeric error codes, beep symptoms, and function, indicator, infrared, keyboard, LCD, peripheral and power symptoms.
* Product overview — specifications, status indicators, FRU tests and the Fn key combinations.
* Running the diagnostics (p. 49), including the diagnostic error codes (p. 52); related service procedures (p. 55): status indicators, password combinations (p. 56), low-level format, maintenance diskette download, Fn key combinations.
* Symptom-to-FRU index — numeric error codes, error messages, beep symptoms, LCD-related symptoms, intermittent problems and undetermined problems.
* FRU removals and replacements (pp. 58-103): numbered procedures from 1010 DIMM card and backup battery (p. 62) to 2050 LCD cable (p. 103).
* FRU replacement notices — the screw notices (torque and thread-lock rules, which matter on magnesium frames) and retaining serial numbers.
* Locations (p. 104) and parts listing (p. 107): system unit, drives, LCD FRUs (p. 111) and option parts (p. 118). Notices (p. 123).
* Removing and replacing a FRU — the numbered 10xx sequence, which must be followed in order because later steps assume earlier ones.
* Locations — front, rear and bottom views by machine type.
* Parts list — FRU part numbers, including the keyboard and LCD part numbers by country and panel supplier.

Module level, and firmly so. These manuals name FRU part numbers, not component values. Across a typical ThinkPad maintenance manual the word "capacitor" appears once, in the ESD handling note. There is no schematic, no board layout, no parts list below FRU level and no component data of any kind. A system board is one line item with one part number.
The manual works at FRU level. It has no schematics and no component values, and a system board is a single part number. The only capacitor it mentions is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide.

That is IBM's service model, not a gap in the scan, and it is why no ThinkPad on this wiki has a component-level capacitor list. If you need a board-level repair on a ThinkPad, this manual will tell you which board and how to get it out; it will not tell you what is on it.

The power systems checkout (pp. 29-31) gives these limits: AC adapter output +15.5 to +17.0 V dc at pin 1; battery +0 to +13.5 V dc between terminals 1 and 4, discharged if below +11.0 V dc, and 4 to 30 kΩ between terminals 3 and 4 if above it; backup battery +2.5 to +3.7 V dc on the red wire.

What this manual does not contain

The manual works at FRU level. It has no schematics and no component values, and a system board is a single part number. The only capacitor it mentions is the "bulging capacitor" hazard in the safety inspection guide.

What it settles

The power systems checkout (pp. 29-31) gives these limits: AC adapter output +15.5 to +17.0 V dc at pin 1; battery +0 to +13.5 V dc between terminals 1 and 4, discharged if below +11.0 V dc, and 4 to 30 kΩ between terminals 3 and 4 if above it; backup battery +2.5 to +3.7 V dc on the red wire.
