It is by a wide margin the most complete Sega document on this wiki for the Model 1 unit, and it goes all the way down to PCB copper layers.
It covers the unit down to component level on all three of its boards (main, sub and connect), with parts lists, schematics, mount diagrams and copper artwork.

The scan carries a text layer.

* '''The Mega CD Model 1 is three boards, not one''': a '''main board''', a '''sub board''' and a '''connect board'''. Each has its own parts list, its own schematic and its own mount diagram. A capacitor list for this machine that does not say which board a designator belongs to is ambiguous.
* The Model 1 Mega CD has three boards, each with its own parts list, schematic and mount diagram, and each numbers its parts from 1. A designator such as C41 means nothing without the board name.
* '''The IC complement of the main board''', with pin assignments for each: IC1/IC2 HD68HC000CP-12 and the Sega custom '''MCE2 MB634120, part 315-5548'''; IC3 custom '''RF5C164A, part 315-5476A'''; IC6 MB3790; IC7/IC8 TC511664BZ-80; IC10/IC11 TC51832FL-10; IC13 LC8951; IC14/IC15 MB8464A-80. On the sub board: IC1 LC7883KM, IC2 LC7881M-C, IC3/IC4/IC5 µPC844G2.
* Main board ICs: IC1 HD68HC000CP-12; IC2 the Sega custom MCE2, MB634120, part 315-5548; IC3 the custom RF5C164A, part 315-5476A; IC6 MB3790; IC7 and IC8 TC511664BZ-80; IC10 and IC11 TC51832FL-10; IC13 LC8951; IC14 and IC15 MB8464A-80. Sub board: IC1 LC7883KM, IC2 LC7881M-C, IC3 to IC5 µPC844G2.
* '''The Model 1 boards use a plain interleaved
C
sequence with no
CE
series''' — C1 through C58 in one run, with the electrolytics named in the description column (for example C41–C50 are 10 µF 16 V, Sega 150-0400 / 150-0400-01, and C51/C52 are 100 µF 6.3 V radial, 150-0401). This matches the [[Mega Drive Maintenance Manual - PAL-G, August, 1992, Rev. A|Mega Drive Model 1]] convention, not the Model 2 one.
* Electrolytic capacitors, from the parts lists (pp. 96 and 98):
* '''Two part numbers are given for the same position''' in places — 150-0400 and 150-0400-01 for C41–C50 — which is Sega recording a second approved vendor, not a contradiction.
** Main board: C41 to C50, 10 µF 16 V chip electrolytics (150-0400, or the alternative 150-0400-01); C51 and C52, 100 µF 6.3 V radial (150-0401). C53, C54 and C56 to C58 are not used.
** Sub board: C1 to C14, 10 µF 16 V radial (150-0402); C40 and C42, 100 µF 6.3 V 105 °C (150-0404); C41, 100 µF 6.3 V radial (150-0401); C43, 100 µF 16 V (150-0059). C36 to C39 are not used.
** Connect board: none. Its only capacitors are eighteen 150 pF ceramic chips.
* Unlike the Mega Drive boards, these lists group capacitors by type in consecutive designator runs, and the run of identical electrolytics at C41 to C50 is what Sega's list gives. The part number series still marks the dielectric: 150-xxxx electrolytic, 151-xxxx ceramic.

The Sega CD Service Manual hosted here is Sega Enterprises, Ltd.'s MEGA-CD Maintenance Manual, August 1992, Rev. A, for the first-generation Mega CD. The cover reads "Export" and the title page "Europe"; the boards and accessories it lists are the export versions. The scan is 118 pages with a text layer. The page title uses the American name for the machine.

It covers the unit down to component level on all three of its boards (main, sub and connect), with parts lists, schematics, mount diagrams and copper artwork.

What this manual settles

[edit | edit source]
  • The Model 1 Mega CD has three boards, each with its own parts list, schematic and mount diagram, and each numbers its parts from 1. A designator such as C41 means nothing without the board name.
  • Main board ICs: IC1 HD68HC000CP-12; IC2 the Sega custom MCE2, MB634120, part 315-5548; IC3 the custom RF5C164A, part 315-5476A; IC6 MB3790; IC7 and IC8 TC511664BZ-80; IC10 and IC11 TC51832FL-10; IC13 LC8951; IC14 and IC15 MB8464A-80. Sub board: IC1 LC7883KM, IC2 LC7881M-C, IC3 to IC5 µPC844G2.
  • Electrolytic capacitors, from the parts lists (pp. 96 and 98):
    • Main board: C41 to C50, 10 µF 16 V chip electrolytics (150-0400, or the alternative 150-0400-01); C51 and C52, 100 µF 6.3 V radial (150-0401). C53, C54 and C56 to C58 are not used.
    • Sub board: C1 to C14, 10 µF 16 V radial (150-0402); C40 and C42, 100 µF 6.3 V 105 °C (150-0404); C41, 100 µF 6.3 V radial (150-0401); C43, 100 µF 16 V (150-0059). C36 to C39 are not used.
    • Connect board: none. Its only capacitors are eighteen 150 pF ceramic chips.
  • Unlike the Mega Drive boards, these lists group capacitors by type in consecutive designator runs, and the run of identical electrolytics at C41 to C50 is what Sega's list gives. The part number series still marks the dielectric: 150-xxxx electrolytic, 151-xxxx ceramic.

What this manual does not contain

[edit | edit source]

  • Component-level fault finding. The repair flow chart stops at module level, and the check-cartridge errors name a function or chip area.
  • Anything on the Model 2.
