IBM 5100 Maintenance Information Manual
The IBM 5100 Maintenance Information Manual, order number SY31-0405-3 (October 1979), is IBM's field service manual for the IBM 5100 Portable Computer. 389 pages.
What it contains
[edit | edit source]- Safety — service personnel safety practices and the machine's own hazards.
- Locations (section 2) — the power supply (206), the AC box in both old style and new style (207), the 5106 Auxiliary Tape Unit (208), removals and replacements (271), the Y1 power socket pin assignments and the DC rail tolerance table (272), and AC voltage distribution for both AC box styles (273).
- Maintenance analysis — the bring-up and process-check procedures, error codes and probe points.
- Theory (section 4) — including "Power Supply PC Board" and "Power Supply Protection", which describe the supply as a transistor switching regulator (TSR) producing five DC voltages, and give the overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent trip conditions.
- CE meter calibration check (270) — the machine provides a +6 Vdc zener reference at J2-S02 so a service meter can be checked and its readings corrected.
What it does not contain
[edit | edit source]There is no component-level parts list for the power supply, and no capacitance values anywhere in the manual. The DC power supply is treated as a single field-replaceable unit. The only capacitors identified by designator are the AC-box capacitors C1 to C5 in the AC voltage distribution diagrams, which are named but not valued. Component values for the 5100 would have to be read off the boards themselves.
